I went airforce few years ago. Do yourself a favor and join rotc program and go officer. I'm enlisted but I'm doing school while I'm in. It's not for everyone. I did. Enlisted in the Guard as combat medic for the purpose of doing ROTC through the Simultaneous Membership Program. I spent a year in the program, learned about being an officer, decided I didn't want to deal with the moral issues I had with it and the fact that I can't deal with that much bullshit.
What I want to do is switch over to the Navy as a Boatswain's Mate. If I had enlisted with no intention of doing ROTC at the specific college where my siblings have gone (no NROTC), I would have joined the Navy as a BM.

If you wanna base where you go to college around ROTC then go to a college where the ROTC program is low on cadets, so they'll give you a contract. People can be in ROTC without a contract and they eventually have to drop it, because they get to be a junior in college without a contract. If you go to a college where he ROTC program is jam packed, only the top dogs get scholarships. Before the draw down, they were handing out contracts like crazy, but it's different now.

During that time you get paid like 500 a month or so (after income tax). While in the Netherlands if you do some standard entree level job you're already making more than an officer would ever make in half a year or so.

Doing ROTC you have a few options. Look at them all before committing to just one.
There is the scholarship option. You don't have to attend Basic, although you have to go to a 4 week summer camp for freshmen scholarship cadets in Fort Knox. It is generally difficult to get these scholarships. Also, if you fail the program or walk out, the Army will decide whether you owe back every dollar they spent on you or if you have to in the Army as enlisted for 4 years.
Then, there is the Guard option. You enlist in the National Guard, just like normal. You pick an MOS, you go to Basic and AIT. When you come back to college, you do your packet for what is called "Simultaneous Membership Program". You will "contract" as a cadet. When you go to drill, you are paid as an E-5 and wear a dot for rank. You get the same stipend all cadets get. Plus, in my state, tuition is 100% paid if you're in the Guard. Then, you can also apply for a GRFD scholarship if you're in SMP, guaranteeing that you commission into the Guard, for 5000 dollars every semester on top of your 100% tuition assistance, E-5 drill pay, stipend, and whatever kicker you get. If you quit or fail ROTC, you go back to your unit and keep the job you trained for before ROTC.
SMP is what I did, and it is the better option. SMP cadets make tons of money just by attending college.

If you don't mind making a career out of it, here's the path:
Step 1, A) Join the national guard, what you're looking for are a few things,
A GI bill kicker, gives you extra monthly stipend while you're using your GI bill (More on that later) comes in handy if you're providing yourself through college
A long ass training as a rear echelon motherfucker. 90 series, the ones who repair shit, get a good asvab and go for that, or some intel job if you can get a unit that needs one, don't go human intel, you'd be on patrols. Long job training gives you more cash on hand to pay for college up front.
Exiting AIT preferably before fall semester, at worst exiting AFTER the start of the spring semester. Indiana (Don't know the other states) passed a law saying basically you get the guard tuition money only after dipping into federal, effectively you'll be getting full tuition and GI bill for the first year only if you graduated job training a year after the start of your second semester.
B) Optionally, you can skip the middleman and join an ROTC program. Contracts tend to include tuition, room and board, and a stipend. They can also include student loan repayment if you take student loans for the first year before you get a contract.
Step 2) Go to fucking college, get good fucking grades, max your PT scores. Your goal is to get a contract with your ROTC unit now. If you do you won't have to go to your unit and fuck up your study schedule
Step 3) Graduate with a 3.2 (Preferably at LEAST 3.5) and score well on the MCAT, take medical school prereqs. Get accepted into a med school and speak to your unit about the AMEDD program, if you're accepted, you can immediately enter officer training to become a doctor of your choice, provided there is need for your field (There's lists of the types of slots they have, surgeons usually have a few slots)
You'll get room and board, tuition, all book fees, and a healthy stipend.

1) 4 years of college, 4 years of med school, if you went route A you're now about half way to getting a pension from the national guard.
2) If you like the active duty life style, guess what, you can serve out your national guard service requirement as active duty. Healthier retirement funds if you spend more time in active, also 'special pay' as a highly skilled job to help match civilian sector. They like to keep docs.

This can branch off into 3 different sub-rates. (AE, ATO, ATI)
When you're in bootcamp you can ask the detailer you see in week 2 or 3 or so, and they'll ask if you signed up for AV.
Say yes and say you want to be an AVI. That's how you guarantee it, it's what my buddy did.
