I do my back without the black guard on the trimmer. The one I got (the Philips body groom) is pretty long, so I can reach all spots if I change hands. I also have a small (less than 30cm) mirror I use to check my neck area. Trimming your back is harder than "shaving" it with an electric clipper/trimmer (meaning, bare metal, no plastic guard). It will be visibly gone, which is good enough for the back.
