If you break in a semi auto and use ammuntion that it feeds reliably, you'll have almost not problems with it. And while revolvers don't "jam", if something does go wrong, which it can if you're not careful, you'll need a gunsmith to unfuck it, if it hasn't exploded, which is counter productive in a self defense situation.
As to shootablility, that's up to the shooter thenselves, I prefer shooting semi autos because of the shorter trigger pull, and I prefer double action only pistols for the consistent trigger pull weight.

The advantage revolvers have is in a situation such as what George Zimmerman was in where your attacker is physically holding onto the slide which will stop you from firing more than one round. Revolvers don't have this issue.
But what it really comes down to is what you're most comfortable carrying and can shoot the best.

Mostly comes down to a good holster and belt.
As for concealment, the thickness of the gun is most important, followed by the grip length, then the barrel length. A thin gun is MUCH easier to conceal, and a gun with a short grip doesn't catch on your shirt as much.
I wouldn't recommend pocket carry, but it is a thing, for better or worse.

Of course, I personally think the first thing a new gun person should consider is WHY you want a gun.
Hunting, Target shooting, Hella fun, Patriot, carry, home intruders........
It's a BIG list.... Try to get a gun that covers as many of those as possible.
Hunters tend to be pretty picky but birds need a shotgun, Pigs do well with a .357 rifle. deer is 30-06.
Target shooting is just EVERYTHING!!
Hellafun is like a 12ga shotgun, AR-15 if you like to tinker and buy options, or a glock 19.
Carry is really tricky so you need to talk to a local shop about all those details.....
Home intruders is a shot barrel shotgun or an AR-15 if their are a bunch of them (AK-47 too!). If a minimal threat then that Glock 19 will do the job.
Always consider a good used gun! They are cheaper and if you change your mind as you learn you can trade them in easily with minimal money loss. Always consider the price of ammo to feed it. I spend a whole lot more money on ammo than the original price of the gun that eats it....
You are going to need shooting glasses, ear muffs, and at least minimal cleaning supplies too. Get one of those $10 bullshit Hoppes things at first.... Amazon has the rest and youtube is your friend on how to clean any gun....
If you like all this in about a year you will be a gun expert just like me :)

It is just a Glock replica and at the time it was almost half the price.
That said it isn't that bad to shoot, which I haven't in a long time. The slide occasionally sticks, which is the only problem I've had with it. I really like cleaning guns more than shooting them.
Also I only ever carried it as an ankle holster, which is kind of uncomfortable and hard to get to.
