The old flag was not readopted after WWI because of a wish to distance ourselves from communism which was brewing nearby in addition for it being a terrible flag for what its purpose is. One of the reasons behind flags is to make an easy association for patriotism, something children can easily copy to instill a sense of belonging in them, that flag would be impossible to copy. It is the same as the Welsh flag, it might look sort of nice, but good luck trying to get kids to copy it and not make it look like a red dildo with wings.

We have mandatory military service for males. You get conscripted, then they do some tests with you to determine what you can do. For an example, if you're strong and have good eyesight, you'll most likely get into anti-aircraft. the trade you learned is relevant here too, mechanics will almost always be tank mechanics and cooks will be cooks, etc. All kinds of stuff, from basic infantry to panzergrenadier and more.
It's pretty loose nowadays though, so it's not as mandatory as it used to be. You can basically opt out and pay a fine instead.
As for the training itself you get a few months of basic training, where you learn to shoot a rifle, assemble a rifle, march with the rifle, run with the rifle, stuff like that.
Then you get into the specific training of the function you were assigned (as mentioned before) and get trained in that specifically. You keep coming back to that for a few years usually, some functions you can do in one piece if you want.
You get to keep the rifle afterwards. Technically no ammo, though everyone just brings some home anyways.
Sharpshooting is a very widespread hobby aswell. People do it with the mindset of "I'll go down to the shooting range, empty a magazine on target, then go home" so they don't forget how to aim.
