After Ukraine impeached and threw out its pro-Russian president, Russia invaded Crimea and claimed it, under the guise it was "self-defense forces".
They did the same in eastern Ukraine. However, the population in Crimea wanted to be Russian, and they'd wanted to join Russia for a long time. So Ukraine was more or less willing to let that go.
But Ukraine fought much much harder than anyone expected in the east - in late 2014 they had the rebels surrounded in their two capitals, Luhansk and Donetsk.
So Russia sent much more of their legit military. For a while there was a peace agreement and not much was going on but an artillery duel now and then, but now its gone red-hot once more.
That's a relatively unbiased summary. The separatists will tell you Ukraine got taken over by a Nazi junta (not exaggerating, that is what they say).

Russia supplied bandits with manpower, training, weapons and vehicles, and they dug in well enough to repel shitty Ukrainian forces that were rotting for 25 years now.
Then, Russia ran out of money and Ukraine ran out of will, and the situation stagnated.
Now, Russia pulled out from Syria, freeing up more people to send into Ukraine, so Ukraine is trying to prevent any more advances by the bandits.
