I grew up in a rural area 10 minutes from a town of 10,000 and 40 minutes from a city of 600,000, and I lived for 3 years in the heart of that city.
In my opinion, the best place to live and raise a family is in a rural area with some land and nature around you, but to have good roads and highways that allow quick access to "civilization".

Grew up in a suburb of a medium size city. All I remember was before I was able to drive it was pretty hard to do anything - typical suburb. After that, and whenever I go home, I am always, always driving.
