IIRC Jaguar used a Transit with the XJ220 engine just to test the engine in city scenarios without raising suspicion by driving a supercar like the XJ220 through the middle of town and not as a racing concept. Still an awesome idea

The idea was that the ground effect tunnels in the center of the car would produce enough "Groundforce" to offset the extreme weight on the sides... It didn't work because the car produces so much downforce that the chassis would flex.

Basically a 9 tonnes platform that can get up to 170 km/h thanks to a pair of 350ci chevy V8s (one for the car, one for the middle-mounted tested tire). The idea behind this was to have a real life conditions test bed for their truck tires.
It got a tad cucked by the introduction of speed limits on highways (130 km/h) which confined the "Mille-Pattes" (French for centipede) on test tracks.
Because, of course, that monster was road legal and supposed to do its testing on open roads.

Current BTCC regs allow for all sorts of oddball cars to compete, since there's a lot of spec bits you can run what you want as long as the body has the right size and 4 or 5 doors (or it shares the 4/5 door model's roof line like the 3 door 1 series)
There were plans of building a pair of Range Rover Evoques, but RR was having none of it.

The BTCC is a magical place. A place were a flame spitting Toyota Avensis is a regular front runner.
It's just a repmobile, not even pretending to be premium or sporty like everything else these days. Probably one of the last cars you'd think someone would bother to race with and then there's like half a dozen of these on the grid.

The brothers Horiucho challenged Pikes Peak with this wild, handbuilt FTO-bodied missile originally built for the Japanese Rally series. Open the composite door and you'll notice the 550hp, 2.0L turbocharged engine and driveline sited beside the driver, to improve weight distribution and limit polar inertia. The FTO still features a custom-built, full-time, all-wheel drive with front and rear mechanical plate differential. The car was designed and built by driver, Koichi Horiuchi, who also appears to be an accomplished fabricator. Their assault on the mountain was plagued by mechanical failures: he cooked his turbocharger on Monday, his transfer case failed on Tuesday, and the transmission broke on Wednesday. After overcoming those problems, the car failed again during the Sunday race. However, Koichi was faster past the radar gun than class winner, Richelmi, at 104.4 mph to 101.9 mph.
