I was being a bit harsh on it (I tend to be harsher with my opinions on /mu/), but I find the album to be very single minded. Waters is a good lyricist, but I don't think he's that good of a vocalist. The lack of Gilmore's presence hurts the album a lot imo. Most importantly, I don't find a single track on the album memorable musically. It's just a bland backdrop for Waters poetry, which wouldn't be that bad if not for the fact that, as I said before, he's not a good vocalist.
At the end of the day, I find that an album like Yanqui U.X.O has a much more poignant anti-war message and it does it without lyrics. I feel as if Waters exhausted himself creatively with The Wall and that maybe it would have been best to just go on hiatus after that.

Personally why I love it isn't necessarily the message (which is good but like you said done a lot) but the emotion in it. It's an incredibly emotionally intense album and very sincere and beautiful to me, but it's certainly one of those albums I understand the opposers of. It can come off as preachy at times.
