No they're really not. Went to jazz school. Learned really quick that being able to play jazz with amazing technical proficiency has nothing to do with actually being evocative and meaningful.
The "great" jazz musicians at my school all had really shit music taste that lacked any and all diversity and awareness of new musical movements. More than that, they were supremely uncreative. It's just a wankfest. I'm probably gonna drop out or switch to something better.
Radiohead is amazing because they can exercise an amazing amount of restraint. If they wanted to, they could release an alienating, experimental record but that's not the point. Their medium is pop music because, as Thom has said, it is able to move the most amount of people.
That's why jazz stopped being as meaningful/significant in the 70s.
