1755 Lisbon earthquake.
Completely destroyed Lisbon.Around 40000 deaths(4% of the country'spopulation).
> On 1 November 1755, the city was destroyed by another devastating earthquake, which killed an estimated 30,000 to 40,000 Lisbon residents[35] of a population estimated at between 200,000 and 275,000,[36][37] and destroyed 85 percent of the city's structures.[38] Among several important buildings of the city, the Ribeira Palace and the Hospital Real de Todos os Santos were lost. In coastal areas, such as Peniche, situated about 80 km (50 mi) north of Lisbon, many people were killed by the following tsunami.
By 1755, Lisbon was one of the largest cities in Europe; the catastrophic event shocked the whole of Europe and left a deep impression on its collective psyche. Voltaire wrote a long poem, Poême sur le désastre de Lisbonne, shortly after the quake, and mentioned it in his 1759 novel Candide (indeed, many argue that this critique of optimism was inspired by that earthquake). Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. also mentions it in his 1857 poem, The Deacon's Masterpiece, or The Wonderful One-Hoss Shay.
>>60555530
the earthquake also inspired a secular humanist movement brought on by the question of why God would do such a thing, if I remember correctly

Come on, you are a white country. You just need to go to any third world 99% brown country like Central America and become king.
>>60565204
wow such an achievement
>>60563909
I'm literally listening to an audiobook about this. We're a nation with a PTSD and don't believe in ourselves. We lost WWII and lost it HARD. We're frustrated because of it because we deserve bigger recognition than we got (especially compared to western European countries) and still have no politial relevane to change it.
Because of it it's easier to shit on your own country and talk about "owning up" to its crimes even if they never happened or were very small. We're a post-colonial country.
>>60565237
Still a white country. You have no idea how many brown countries think Polish genes are improving their race. In Peru or Thailand, I'm pretty sure you would be rich.

You are Polish, they probably will think you are German or North American
>>60565467
Foreigners are interesting. It works pretty much everywhere unless it's a multi-culti shithole and foreigners are nothing unusual. After all, even a Brazilian would probably get attention in Poland

I'd say the Civil War, although we did end up getting rid of slavery, so that's a plus.
When we lost Finland, our greatest ally and brother
8.5.1945
Not because I miss the Third Reich but rather because it dealt a crippling blow to our national self-esteem. My grandma was around for it and she recalled an all-permeating aura of utter despair, full-scale destruction and extreme poverty.
Then which ever day Wilhelm II. became Kaiser in 1888, because it marked the End of reasonable German patriotism
What, 7-1 was that big of a deal?
Here we just talked about it for the few days before the finale, I remember most people felt a mixture of embarrassment and pity for Brazil.
I watched it with my friends and at 5-0 we got pretty quiet...Brazil, you can Start playing now!

>Emperor Jimmu (神武天皇 Jinmu-tennō?) was the first Emperor of Japan, according to legend. His accession is traditionally dated as 660 BCE.[1][2]
That's a lot of bad days
>>60579485
how traumatic was the split of Germany? Not trolling, I seriously I don't know. Were extended families separated by the east/west divide? I heard that many returning POWs from the Russian camps also had it bad finding work and integrating back to society, is that true?
6 December 1917
That's legit probably the only bad day in our history.
