It's not like "phillips-head screwdriver" which can be translated, or "John" which passed through Greece, Rome and France before reaching England and so gets butchered that little bit more each step along the way.

And even if it DID have a root word meaning, in the proto-elvish or somesuch, I'm sure it's more likely to come out as "Aucunbaisedonnés" than simply adding an 'N' on the end

It's not that simple: Frodo Baggins is actually an English translation of his real Westron name Maura Labingi. Also some of the names translated in other languages are canon since Tolkien did the translation himself. For example while translating into German Tolkien used the old German word Elb on purpose insted of Elf because he thought it sounded more accurate.
