Everybody loves armour. And the metropolitan museum of art in New York has probably the best collection in the world, unless someone can show me another.

Here we go

Where did you find these?

And do you prefer Maximilian to tradional? Personally I think the close-helm with a crest is the sexiest battle helm ever conceived, but fluted German Maximilian close helms are nice too.

Im honestly just a francophile at my core and really can't get enough of traditional gendarme suits. But German suits are right behind.

This helmet (plus the replica) is perhaps one of the most amazing archaeological finds of all time. I cannot express how amazingly bad ass this thing is, it's like one of the greatest examples of Saxon/Anglo-Saxon/post-Roman Germanic culture we have.

Sutton Hoo helm ftw.

Parade armor from the 16th century

Thanks Opie, this is a great thread.

It's amazing that the museums in the USA have managed to acquire such a collection considering they never had such a thing.

The Tower of London has an excellent collection, including Henry the VIII's actual armour.

I'll see if I can dig out my pics tomorrow and post them. They are not HR though.

This exquisitely crafted and perfectly preserved suit of armor would have been worn by Abe Masayoshi during his time at the capital, where formal ceremonial attire was often required. The exceptional quality and attention to detail applied to every aspect of the armor’s creation made this suit stand out as a garment of sophisticated refinement, and distinguished its wearer as a man of fine taste, setting him apart from other provincial daimyo. Like other daimyo families during the Edo period (1603–1868),

This is the kind of thing that proves how sophisticated the Japanese are as a people.

It has been said that if there were no Japanese, the Western culture would have felt itself superior to every other human civilization on the planet. Only the order and discipline of Japanese society was comparable to that of the Europeans in the age of exploration, and the Japanese industrialization of the 19th century is evidence of this peerage.

But that suit of ceremonial armor says it so much clearer. Despite never making the transition to plate like the Europeans, this suit is so exquisitely detailed and strikingly stylized in its own distinct manner that it has every right to be presented alongside >>2419580

Kavacha, Armour
ca. 1600-1626

Central India – Decann, Bijapur Sultanate (1490-1686)

Steel

Height 105 cm ; Weight: 14 kg

The Kavacha, or combined armour of chainmail and plate was worn by noblemen horse riders to protect the torso and arms.

This piece is built in steel and features both a chainmail tunic and lamella plates in the torso and back areas. With long sleeves and coming down to the knee, it is remarkably well preserved, with no tears or mending.

The armour displays two engraved inscriptions – one, in the outside part of the top right plate, and another, on the inside, in Hindi and Indo-Aryan script, and in devanagari Persian writing, revealing that it was captured in 1689, in the spoils resulting from the Adoni siege in the Deccan, where the famous battle between the Mughal army and the Deccan Sultans took place.

This Kavacha was part of the group of arms which made up the arsenal of the Bikaner fort, capital of the Adilshahi dynasty, which was captured by one of the generals of the Aurangzeb (r.1659-1707), the Maharajah of Binaker - Anup Singh – when he defeated the last descendent of the Adilshahi dynasty of Jaipur.

Anup Singh (1669-1698) was the oldest son of the Karn Singh Rajah (1631-1669), the house chief of the Aurangzeb Emperor.

The very high quality of the manufacture of this armour shows that this was a piece worn by a high dignitary.

The manufacture of this sort of chainmail tunics, which belonged to the arsenal of the Bikaner fort, was traditionally associated to the city of Jaipur, in the Deccan.

Mail shirts reinforced with steel or iron plates appear to have been developed first in Iran or Anatolia in the late fourteenth or early fifteenth century. Variations of mail-and-plate armor were worn subsequently throughout the Middle East by the Persians, Ottomans, and Mamluks. The style probably was introduced into India early in the Mughal period due to Ottoman influence on Mughal military practices.

The armor is part of a large group of material that comes from the armory of the maharajas of Bikaner in Rajastan, northern India. An inscription inside one of the plates gives the name of Maharaja Anup Singh (reigned 1669–98) and the date samvat 1774 (A.D. 1691). Anup Singh was a general in the armies of the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb and led a series of campaigns in the Deccan in the 1680s and 1690s, including battles at Golconda in 1687 and Adoni in 1689. The date on the armor indicates that it must have been taken as booty during one of the Deccan campaigns.

It's very heavy if you have to march for hours while wearing it.

Modern soldiers train with 40-50lb (18-22kg) packs and they don't have to wield a shield and spear when they find combat.

No one marched around in full plate. At most infantry wore a few parts of plate.

This shirt ranks as one of the most beautiful surviving Mughal armors and is among the earliest dated examples. The armor plates are covered in two-color gold and incised through to the dark iron with Qur'anic inscriptions in elegant calligraphy entwined with delicate foliage. An engraved inscription inside one of the plates identifies this armor as a gift from Sayf Khan, a high-ranking Mughal prince and military official at the court of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan (reigned 1624–58). Additional inscriptions inside the plates record valuations assigned to the armor in the later years of Shah Jahan's rule, suggesting that the armor had belonged to the emperor.

The decorated plates are fitted into a sturdy shirt of thick double-riveted mail of earlier date, possibly the fifteenth century. Each ring is stamped on one side with several of the ninety-nine names of God. The multiple religious invocations on the plates and mail cloaked the wearer in protective prayer. The fish-shaped buckles are also thought to have talismanic value.
>>
>>2434902
yes, plate armour is realy mobile and easy to move in, i dont know why ppl think its haed to move in and that you can slice them open with swords and axes, you wouldent eaven be able to cut chain maile open either
https://youtu.be/juIw20z5p0c?t=350
>>
>>2438126
It's still extremely heavy. If you fall to the ground you will be very slow to get up. In the meantime your opponent can stab you in the exposed joints. Also the helmet has a tiny field of view.
>>
>>2438157
dude are you retarded?, chainmail is not heavy when you wear it, if you fall you can easily get up, its just a myth that chain maile and plate armour is to heavy to get upp from the ground in, just look at a video postet i bit upp and you see that you move without problem in armour
>>
>>2409887
My favorite thing about Sutton Hoo is that it totally legitimized tales like Beowulf, that scholars had long assumed were total fiction, due to the gold and riches described throughout.
>>
>>2434902

Yes, cuts don't do anything to it. But a shitty made spear will pierce through that armor when it's thrown at it.
>>
>>2439060
no it wouldent, are you sersly retarded? just watch this video, watch from 10:30 they try to pirce a pice of armour with a lance with the same amount of force you would get from a full charge from horseback
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98hRtOJqOYE
>>
>>2439076

Are you an idiot? Do you really think armor is indestructible, and you are some kind of tank with it on?

Arrows could pierce it.
Axes could pierce it.
Spears could pierce it.

It kept you safe from slashing, cutting and blunt impact (to a degree) but there were many weapons you could use to kill someone wearing armor. Don't just go by one youtube video, actually do some fucking research. There are plenty of resources out there that describe how people fought in medieval times.
>>
>>2439097
i have done a lot of reserch you twatt, it was just one of many exampels on how efectiv the armour was but if you done some fucking research yourself you would know it, and to think that you could pierce a breast plate with a spear is fucking retarded, and if you did pirce the ex breaste plate there would still be padding underneath, ex a gambeson, chain mail etc

Ever wondered how people in armour got killed in battles if it was so weapon proof?

You can pierce armour with a spear, but it depends how much force there is behind the strike, the angle of the strike to the armour, how sustained the strike is (just a stab, or sustained force?), even whether the armour is damaged already, or is pristine. The exact location of the strike is also important as some areas have more metal behind them, or are under more or less strain from the shape than other parts might be.

And if you think chain mail is padding, then you're sadly mistaken.
>>
>>2441991
Many armours was wepon proof but that dosent help when you get blunt trauma from the force thru your plate, chainmaile etc, and still you have to be retarded to think you can pirce a currias/breast plate with a spear, and i will admit that it may have ben confusing for some peapol when i wrote padding underneath, ex a gambeson, chain mail etc, but the whay i mean it is that when you wear a plate, chain maile wont be your primary protection, and when you say The exact location of the strike i really hope that you are not so fucking stupid to count a hit in a gap/slit in the armour as a pierceing blow

Most of these are steel, right?

Wouldn't a steel cuirass stop a bullet if further padded with gambesons and shit? So why would they go out of style to give way to just clothes?
>>
>>2465433
They didn't give way to "just clothes", they gave way to composite layers of ceramic material that are a lot lighter than dragging full steel armor around thick enough to effectively stop bullets.
>>
>>2465433
They didnt give way to clothes because of functionality.
Just imagine how expensive it was to train a knight from childhood and outfit him with steel armor, chain mail, padding, and equip him with the best weaponry. Then compare that to how cheap it was to train a peasant how to use a pike in two weeks with hardly any armor and you will see how the Knight in shining armor vanished from battlefields.

I can only speak for chain mail, but there have been a great number of modern weaves developed long after chain mail was last used. A lot of the new weaves sacrifice favorable aspect ratios (AR) for a denser, thicker weave. AR is the ratio of wire diameter to ring diameter. The smaller this number the stronger the ring, however the higher the number the more rings you can connect to it. The most common weave you'll see in this thread is called European 4 in 1 (E4-1) where each ring has four other rings connected to it. However Japanese 3 in 1 and 4 in 1 have also been historically used, as well as logical progressions of European such as 6 in 1. This is a picture of a modern weave called Unbalanced European 4 in 1. The advantages of this weave include all of the advantages of balanced E4-1 including efficient area coverage per ring, relatively lightweight, and easy to make. Its main unique advantage is that each individual ring is harder to isolate when attacked, spreading out the damage across all the rings in the area and effectively making it harder to break. Naturally battle-ready armor would be riveted or welded whereas this sample is not.

tl;dr: We can make some things better, yes, but only marginally.

I have more examples if anyone want to know more but since this is a historical thread I won't presume to continue.

>Modern soldiers train with 40-50lb (18-22kg) packs and they don't have to wield a shield and spear when they find combat.

What the hell are you talking about? I was in the army only 10 years ago and full pack was 50kg, not even including anti armor armament such as mines and bazookas, which would weigh an additional 12 kg each.

In the nordics a standard "test" if you will involved biking and mostly marching 100-120 km within 24h with that gear. Standard, as in the most basic of soldiers were expected to make it.

50 kg is literally nothing if you get it properly distributed so much of the weight is on your hips, like proper gear does it. Granted, some 30kg of that is in a big backpack that can be dropped in times of combat, but still.

are those little levers on the breastplate for resting and steadying your lancer as you charge? All on the one side about the height of the right nipple

blast them with a hose and run away. Eventually they'll go all rusty

This is going way back to the Old Testament of the Holy Bible.

If you remember, Abraham had a cousin named Lot, and he had drunken sex with his daughters, resulting in the Moabite and Ammonite tribes.

Eastern and Western sentiments differ greatly, especially when relating to art. The East is not as much about the replication of visuals, but a translation into symbology.

Yes, thé lever is used to rest thé Lance on it, it made it easier to aim with it and let you get a greater Force behind it

Tower of London Exhibit tour stopped in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA in 1980 at the Cincinnati Art Museum. That was very nice- thank you very much! A visit towards the NE corner of the same state offered some more armor at the lovely and impressive Cleveland Museum of Art in a permanent gallery dedicated to their collection, the Armor Court which also includes Horse armor.

...again blipping with feminine impact...
Here in the Arms and Armour section of the Kunsthistorisches Museum was ...this extremely scary suit of armor with a skirt? Were there actual women requiring feminine suits of armor? The waist seems small enough for a woman. The helmet has a devilish look, male or female. Was this suit designed to get the enemy wondering exactly what he was up against?
>>
>>2512294
Armor like this dates from about the 1500s. King Henry VIII of England had a set like it. It was not made for a woman, but for a man planning to engage in ground combat. The skirt would protect his legs better than traditional pants-style armor. Form-fitting armor needs joints that bend. Joints mean there are gaps that a sword or axe or spear could penetrate. A strong skirt, covering the knees, might look unwieldy to us, but we might be glad enough to reach for one if we were faced with hand-to-hand combat.

The fluted design of the skirt was not just a fashion statement. The folds made the armor plate stronger. But it was still not strong enough to block musket fire, which was slowly taking over the battlefield. Fancy suits of armor went out of vogue on the battlefield by the 1700s, although kings and princes sometimes wore them into battle as marks of status, much as they sometimes wore battlefield crowns. This seems ill-advised to me–why make oneself an obvious target? Still, there are examples of elaborately decorated skirted suits designed to be worn on horseback.

where's H potter when needs be...

Q: If he thrusts from above towards your breast and surprises you so that you were unable to take hold of your dagger, then with your right hand grasp his hand behind his dagger, strike with your left arm over his right arm, put your left hand on your breast, and press your right hand strongly towards yourself. Thus you will break his arm or throw him downwards in front of you as you see painted above... apparently

It actually is in revival across europe right now, we have school here teaching old techniques derived from old germanic and italian scripts about medieval fighting from halberds to pommle knives and short swords. Mostly far more sophisticated the ever thought of and up to level of kung fu, judo and jiu jitsu.
