It appeared through merchants. However it spread because some of the local rulers saw Islam as a convenient vehicle to spread their power over their neighbours.
Small Malay/Javanese coastal kingdoms and port-towns asserted their independence from the declining Hindu empire of Majapahit during the 15th-16th centuries in order to ideologically assert their autonomy and independence. Conversion further integrated them into the Indian Ocean trade, since it was already the dominant religion of the merchants active there (even China had large populations of Muslim sea merchants). These kingdoms then grew in power and scale, overshadowing and replacing the Hindu/Buddhist kingdoms, which along with the proselytism of saints like the Wali Sanga in Java spread the religion inland.
