How did they achieve this affect? I see that they choose different variations in type weight to make some regions darker, but they could not have distributed this by hand. That would have taken literally forever.

Thanks for the reply. I definitely can't afford an $80 plugin (wasn't Illustrator like $300-400 before Adobe went the subscription route? Seems a bit much for a plugin), but maybe phantasm is included in their trial? I'll go digging around for a free alternative I guess.
If anybody else has any ideas, post them. I'll keep up with the thread.

Looks like a regular text with a number grid clipping mask.

>new layer, copypaste tons of numbers
>edit font settings to make them small and evenly spaced
>make the color a light gray
>new layer, write whatever you want using a darker colour
>right click > create clipping mask
I think that would be it. You can duplicate the text layer to make some letters darker than others and then mask those others out.
