So I'm in need of a new cellphone. I'm currently using a Moto E 2nd Generation. What I'm looking for is a mid-end cellphone, preferably with a maximum 5" screen. These are some phones I've looked at, I know that the 5X is 5"2' but the pure android is so nice I can disregard it.
I mostly use the phone for listening to music, surfing and calling. I'm looking for a sturdy phone, since I do hiking on my free time.

Go with Sony Compacts.
They put up everything you need to do a proper AOSP build https://github.com/sonyxperiadev and the developer portal is pretty top notch http://developer.sonymobile.com

No, I am talking about removing their build of Android and installing a pure build(AOSP).

I wouldn't recommend installing custom Roms to a guy who doesn't know which phone to get.

While true, they make it pretty easy to flash back to stock(http://www.flashtool.net/index.php)
Also it is better to support phones that have proper support for this then say Samsung phones.
Sony and Motorola both suck compared to Nexus.
Don't even bother, they suck at updating and come with non stock Android.

Yeah, stock android is super nice. The best part about my Moto E (probably the only part that didn't suck about it)
