Is this a problem with notebook gpus or just desktop? I have an asus laptop with radeon 8670m gpu and about a week ago when i started up tribes:ascend it just turned itself off due to overheating. A few days ago, when doing a mse scan i noticed the 97 celsius temperatures and realized that the fans are off (the reason why it turned off). i put the laptop to sleep and 15 minutes later opened it and everything worked fine (fans started up), but i wonder did all this happen because of faulty drivers? laptop is little more than half a year old and was kept clean from dust all the time (kept on flat table surface so no choking of vents)

I havean R9-290 and I have this issue. Good thing my GPU throttles when it reaches 94C. I have to manually set the fan speed in MSI AB.

It has happened to me in the past. Olova sudden my screen signal was becoming corrupt with "noise" and I immediately thought my GPU is frying. Opened catalyst controls and saw 100+ temps while fan was at 0. From that point on I always check me fan speed and temp.

This year they had another driver that damaged laptop lcd panels.
Nvidia is having drivers like this on a regular basis, but for some reason AMD is the bad drivers meme.
So what I'm gathering from this thread is the only way to not eventually have your PC set your house on fire is to use an IGPU.
I guess it makes sense, PCs were never intended for games. That's why we have consoles. I think I'll be selling my 980 since I don't think my insurance would cover a fire started by my computer, and I'll just stick to my PS4 and Wii U for games. Thanks for the help, guys.

Just checked mine and it's still at the same level it was before installing Crimson, not that it matters as I'm water cooling.
Should this really be able to kill cards though? My understanding is that the card will reduce its clock speed to maintain the set maximum temperature if the max fan speed isn't adequate. Also, doesn't all modern hardware throttle or shut down the system if things reach dangerous temps? I thought the only way to kill things these days was with overvolting.

Crimson does do some retarded shit for me, their shitty FPS limit keeps resetting to 55FPS whenever I run certain games, like BF4.

Were any of you running Beta Drivers prior to the install and did not do a wipe before upgrading? Are you running any third party GPU management software like afterburner?
Trying to find if there is a trigger to this bug because I can't for the life of me get it to happen on my R9 290.
I'm going to try purposely do a dirty update by uninstalling crimson, install beta 15.11 and install crimson over it. Maybe try afterburner as well. If any of you could answer that could help. Wish me luck.
I don't understand how this is possible at all. These cards have hardware safeties in them that shut down the GPU in the case of overheating.

Oh god never use the stock cooler if you can help it, especially on that AMD chip. You don't have to get a Noctua or anything but a Hyper 212 should be plenty. Get some Arctic Silver or other decent paste and learn how to apply it properly and you're good to go. Make sure you have a well ventilated case and that your ambient temps aren't too hot in your room either.

It's AMD's fault for sometimes not saving the OverDrive settings after a restart so some people got stuck with 20% fan speed after messing around and never thought about it after.
But AMD is also free of trouble because the user accepted the terms of use for OverDrive.
You start to notice stuttering and performance loss due to heat throttling as soon as it hits 70°c.
Now for your gpu to be fried it definitely has to hit 100°C minimum, and at that point you should have noticed that something's wrong.

All the shitposting aside I have this problem with my 7970: Crimson sets the the fan speed to manual at 40% after every reboot. So the fans are louder then they should be. This however will not 'kill' or 'burn' your GPU when you heavily use it as it will just throttle once the temperature target is reached. I went back to CCC 15.11.1 and everything works fine again. I'll update to the next Crimson version once it gets released. I also reported the problem to AMD.
