MIUI hasn't been good since Gingerbread. Back then it actually had a lot of good features that other roms didn't have, while also being pretty fast. Especially the themes were nice.

There are certain apps I never open directly, like messenger and YouTube, so those obviously don't need to be on my homescreen. I have 5 on my screen and those are the ones I use everyday. They are also "covers" from action launcher though, basically both app links and folders by swiping up on the app. In the folders I put the apps I only use every couple of days. How many of those apps do you really click everyday? Also app links can be hidden with gestures, and widgets. For instance I don't need a weather app because I just have the weather icon on my screen link to it. It is a balance though, too many and it is hard to find things, too minimal and it becomes cumbersome

Everything except the icons is a static widget built in Zooper Pro, which is covering the entire home screen of Nova Prime. Nova has a setting that allows elements to overlap, so it was just a matter of centering the widget to the icons.
The icons are (almost) all folders assigned individual icons (muh minimalism), another Nova feature. Then, using Zooper, the clock is a shortcut for Google Now, the weather icons and info all open Weather Underground, and the battery icon opens Zooper so I can fuck with the widget when I feel like it.
