I saw a stark white squirrel like picture related yesterday when I was driving through Tunbridge in Kent towards London. Sadly I didn't have time to stop and have a better look but it was the most astonishing thing I've ever seen.
Its highly unlikely anyone will see it again but if you're in the area keep an eye out.

Didn't know thats how melanistic tigers looked, assumed they'd be similar to black leopards and jaguars where the base colour was darker and the marking were normal. Pretty cool.

This guy pops up regularly in these threads, but yes he's really beautiful, really lets you appreciate the cheetah's unique body shape without the heavy spots to break up the outline. On a related note, just found out the saharan subspecies was a thing. Smaller, paler, with fewer spots and very light bodied. Very distinct looking.

I wouldn't call them 'true' melanism. I retain very little information but I believe it has to due with the genes that account for their stripes. Think king cheetahs and tabby cats, or cats in general really and how flexible their markings are. It's a mutation of their striped/spotted gene. Not sure about tigers(tigers like this is very, very rare and i've only seen two other photos of different tigers that were so old they were in black and white) but for wildcats and cheetahs, the gene responsible is Taqpep. Not only the mutation may alter their patterns, but it also tends to give them an immunity boost.
