But just because I am feeling generous, go read the "Wheel of Seiyuu" series and look up how many of the interviewed seiyuu mention Hayashibara as the person they look up to. Most of them mention someone from a younger generation.
Which is only logical, while Hayashibara had a huge influence in the industry her time in the spotlight is long, long done. Nana replaced her niche in the 00's.
So most seiyuu of younger generations are not well acquainted with her besides knowing her by name and some of her most iconic roles.
They are more likely to latch to someone that was booming during their same generation or a bit later, and not twenty years ago.
Inori Minase looks up to Nana, Ayaneru looks up to Hanazawa and Aoi, etc
I also love how you use the term Idol as a your personal boogeyman for anything ignoring that being a popular radio personality and singer many considered Hayashibara herself one.

I think Hayashibara and Nana have a great relationship with on and off work. Square Enix isn't really married to the anime scene and it's tendencies and kind of more mainstream so they'll just do whatever as long as the VA can actually fulfill the requirements of the role. The game is probably the best counterexample of the whole Miyuki Sawashiro=Best Girl meme. Also I don't normally like Ai Kayano or her characters in anime much at all but I like her stint as Y'shtola so that's another thing that's widely different once a seiyuu is outside the anime scene.

I actually recall Square Enix and organizers in generally being distinctly worried about his public appearance at E3 2015 since he so rarely appears in public and is just such a fucked up weird human being that he might go off PR message and just fuck up the whole damn segment.
