night terror's are caused by being half asleep/half awake, as you can usually move your eyes, but not your body. your brain fills in the gaps for the missing stimulus.
nightmares happen while fully asleep.

Friend of mine in rural western state told a story about when he was a kid.
He woke up in the middle of the night, and little men with huge black eyes took him out to the yard and showed him a strange egg.
He woke up in the chicken coop the next morning.
He only told this story once, and he always got upset when we brought it up after that.

Basically each time the trigger is pulled, the universe will split in order to accommodate each outcome.

She lived on the other side of town, and every night I took back roads to get home so I can listen to music a little longer.
