Hello, been trying to find manuals, books and other referencing of the heavy tank Kv-1s.

What I'm looking for in specific is armor thickness of the turret mantlet.

Any books/magazines or manuals of the other kv tanks is also appreciated.

The books i have access to right now is:
-Panzerjäger vs Kv-1
-Kv-1 & 2 Heavy tanks 1939-45
-Kv-1 magazines by Vollert for tankograd publishing.

Found this in the PantherFibel:

Numbers in circle are "Plattendicke in mm" and plate slope.

Wow, this is great!
Pantherfibel you say?
Have to get that one.

Does it have anything on the Kv-1s?

Thanks a lot!

Get the Pantherfibel and the TigerFibel RIGHT NOW.

They're in German but are extremely pro tier.

Most of the manuals are about operating the radio and the rangefinder, but the last chapter is target information on enemy tanks. Mostly t-34 and Sherman, unfortunately.

The search continues for the mantlet of the kv-1s then.

Im currently in the works for fixing the Mantlet for the kv-1s in warthunder. Some stupid modeller put 53mm on the mantlet. but all sources so far state that the thinnest piece of the entire turret is 75mm while the front has the minimum effective thickness of 82mm.

Which makes it kinda strange having the most vital part of the turret being 52mm. Would you think?

If they were so eager on minimizing the weight of the KV-1S, im pretty sure they'd reduce overall armor elsewhere on the turret or hull than making it have a big glaring weakspot where it is most likely to get hit, center mass.

Correction* "Wouldn't you think" and 55mm on the mantlet.

Depends: the turret is by definition sloped, and if it's doing its job, there's going to be nothing in front of it /to/ shoot.

The only reason tanks had armor above that required to fend off infantry fire is because you want to survive hits from concealed enemies, you want to survive fire from enemies you are advancing upon, you want to survive fire from enemies when you are fighting multiple of them, say when you lay in wait for an unknown number of enemies and then instead of 1 enemy, you have 3. Technically you should be able to take 2 before the third one gets a shot in on you. But you need the armor for that one shot. And thats not mentioning for those occasions an enemy has enough armor to survive a hit by chance or when you need to get closer to an enemy due to the guns inadequate penetration.

The mantlet is however NOT sloped. Its the only part of the turret that isnt sloped, and its the thinnest on the entire turret, its also the smallest part of the entire turret. You see how you can find this as an occurrence that is not a mistake on the engineers part, but that of the 3d modeller/designer, since its based on a guess or information fed to them that is false.

82mm minimum thickness on the front of the turret from 2 sources so far. That is effective thickness. So a 0 sloped mantlet needs to be 82mm to achieve that minimum. meanwhile some parts of the turret are only required to be(as they are ingame 75mm and 50mm respectively and achieve above 90mm effectiveness.

This minimal amount of armor comes with a really sad sad cost in warthunder. 55mm armor, anything above the reserve tanks can pen it form 500m away. And reserve tanks can pen it within 500 meters in some cases. Kind of sad really.
