OK almost entirely anime focused help board, I am completely out of the computer-tech loop and require your assistance. I rent out a basement, the surface dwellers above me have wifi I can access. However I've been paying for my own wired connection for the past year so no one can pray into my porn viewing habits. In an effort to save cash I'd like to cancel it and just pay for VPN.
Would my proposed (see pic) idea work? What equipment do I need?
If they aren't tech savvy, they won't be able to view your web history without physically being at your computer.
If they are tech savvy and super interested in what you jerk off too, even a VPN won't work in packet retrieval since it still has to go through their modem and router.

There's no way to make every site request just point to the VPN? I don't think they'd spy on a packet level, just don't need them to know I spend half my weekend jerking it.

No, read up on the OSI model.
HTTP is layer 7, VPNs are layer 3.
It's not all-or-nothing, but you can't do it for just-some-sites, because of a) HTTPS, and b) you'd have to do stateful packet inspection of every HTTP packet to decide how to route it.
