Depending on just how low end your computer is you can definitely play any game from older consoles/handhelds on emulators if you're fine with piracy. The developers won't be making any money from you buying used games anyways so there aren't many ethical issues.

Win3.11 runs fine on DosBox, and you can even find packs that include a copy of DosBox preconfigured to run it if you're feeling lazy. As for installing games, literally drag and drop the installer files into whatever directory you have mounted as C:\ in DB, then run "setup.exe" or whatever in Win3.11.

Well, like many have already suggested, all kinds of roguelike games fit your request perfectly.

If you're new to that genre but know RPG games, then I suggest you try Tales of Maj'Eyal. It's a roguelike that's a bit easier for an entry into the genre, and it has tons of skill trees that you can lose yourself in.

>>24858
Dwarf fortress isn't that bad. It's notoriety comes from people doing things like breeding hundreds of animals for no reason or selecting a huge play area at the start.

You can avoid all of that pretty easily.

>>26103
Xcom doesn't run under DOS: its game clock is the CPU clock divided, so if you're not running it on a 486, the entire alien invasion is over in a few seconds. This is especially noticeable on a modern processor that can fit the entire DOS real-mode address space into its ~3GHz L2.

DosBox does it just fine. Even with the emulation layer, shouldn't be too mean.

There's also a tweaked X-com that runs at a Dos prompt on a 32-bit WinXP/7 system at least, albeit with no sound.

I like your recommendations, but Dungeon Keeper is actually really demanding to run in DosBox. Not sure about DK2, but I know it's a Windows game and that for the longest time it wouldn't work on anything past Win98, but they have it on GoG and similar sites so they probably figured out a way to make it work. That being said, a person could probably try KeeperFX if they want a modern engine for DK1 and aren't too concerned with authenticity. It would probably run much better than running DK1 in Dosbox. And don't get me started on the Win95 executable for DK1... that ran at light speed on my mother's Pentium D rig like 10 years ago, so it would be impossible to play on modern CPUs. XCom should work just fine under Dosbox, especially as it's a 386/486 era game with 320x200 VGA graphics and Soundblaster audio, pretty much the exact sort of thing DosBox is suited for. MoO2 should work fine as well, though it's an SVGA game so it'll likely be a bit more demanding than XCom, though not as much as Dungeon Keeper which uses a 3D engine.

>>26175
Err, it DOES run under DOS, that's what it's designed for. Fortunately, this means that it should be fairly easy to emulate under DosBox. Just don't make the mistake of trying to run it directly on a modern OS without any sort of emulation.

>>26185
This "tweaked" Windows XCom you speak of doesn't exist, you're just describing how the original DOS version works in VDM on a 32-bit Windows NT-based OS. Pretty much no one does this anymore since most people run 64-bit OSes that can't even execute these games directly, and even if you were running a 32-bit OS modern hardware is so much faster and so far removed from what XCom was developed for that it would run at light speed and/or glitch the fuck out if it even ran at all. This is why DosBox exists; to emulate the type of PC these games were designed to run on, no different than using Snes9X for playing Super Nintendo games.
>>
>>26390
Forgot to clarify, Master of Orion 2 should work fine IN DOSBOX. ;) You kind of need DosBox in order to run it in the first place.
>>
>>26390
>Err, it DOES run under DOS
Err, no it DOESN'T, unless you consider the entire earth being invaded before you even click anything "running".

The only way to run it under dos is to get a real 486.

>Terraria
Absolute fuckton of content. Loads of different weapons. Like Minecraft in 2D, but with competent devs. Pirate the GOG version if you don't feel like buying it.
>Dungeon Keeper Gold
Simple, fun, addicting RTS. Starts off fairly easy but gets very tricky later on. Features one of the best vidya narrators/announcers ever. Pirate the GOG version and google the KeeperFX patch.
>Thief Gold/Thief 2
Atmospheric first-person stealth game with great level design. Play on Expert mode for the full experience. Lots of user-made missions. Pirate the GOG versions and download the TFix patch for Thief Gold and Taffer Patcher for Thief 2.
>Doom and its relatives
The greatest FPS [engine] of all time. Virtually infinite content due to mods and level packs. Check the general on /vr/ for links to the .wads. Don't bother buying it.
>Deus Ex 1
Must-play stealth/RPG FPS. Supports multiple play styles and has a great soundtrack. Make sure to download the Deus.exe patch. As usual, pirate the GOG version.
>Risk of Rain
Platformer/shooter with a great soundtrack and lots of characters to unlock. Features co-op.
>Fallout 1-2/Tactics
Dated, but still fun today. Creepy industrial/dark ambient soundtrack. Pirate the GOG versions and google the fan patches (can't remember the names right now).
>Roguelikes in general
Fiendishly difficult and TONS of replay value. Check /rlg/ on /vg/ for recommendations.

Also, most of the games in this image should fit your specifications.
Have fun, OP.

For shame. It's not open-world/randomized, but it'll fuckin keep ya busy for a while if you want a good-ass difficult arcade sidescroller.

Do you think Dwarf Fortress would be better optimized if it weren't for it acquiring cult meme status as a low graphics game that just so happens to be incredibly CPU intensive?

>>26934
You don't need ZSNES unless you're on a Pentium II. Seriously. Snes9x is a much better, more accurate emulator that doesn't need much more for hardware requirements; I should know as I used to use it all the time to run StarFox 2 on my toaster P4 rig 10 years ago. I doubt it's changed much since then, but since I'm a huge autist with a significantly more powerful rig nowadays, I run Higan Accuracy as my SNES emu of choice. I can't really comment on mGBA as I've never used it. The last time I dabbled in any type of GBA emulation was with VBA-M, and it seemed to be alright albeit a bit intensive on the Core 2 Duo rig I ran at the time.

>>24707
What are your specs, OP? Post a screenshot from Speccy if you don't know. It'll make it much easier to find compatible games, as there's a significant difference between a nearly 15 year old Pentium 4 shitbox and an Athlon 64 x2 rig from only a few years later.

His specs are like the bare minimum for running Windows 7 without too many issues. It's not as demanding an OS as one may think, yet sometimes it still feels a tad slow on my Athlon 860k box with 16GB of DDR3...

Anyway OP, your rig should be able to handle games made up to 2003 just fine, though 2004 was kind of a big turning point since it's when Doom 3 and Half Life 2 came out. If you can find ORIGINAL copies of these games that don't have updated engines however, then you should be able to play them without too much difficulty. HL2 will need a non-Steam crack though, and I'm not sure if the current version they sell on Steam will even be playable on your hardware.

Also, just curious, but why are you stuck with such an old machine? I mean, it actually sounds somewhat decent for a P4 era box, but I'm just wondering if it's like a hand me down machine or something you found next to someone's trash. I mean, it amazes me when people manage to get by with computers others would consider junk.

I think I've seen this before. I know that PCSX2 needs it in order to run a few games, though you can only use this patch when you're running 32-bit apps on a 64-bit OS. As far as the OP is concerned, his system can only use up to 4GB, and that's if he somehow manages to find 1GB DDR1 modules, so upgrading to a 64-bit OS is kind of pointless... not to mention it would likely be worse for performance and be missing some drivers.

>>27732
I'm on autismbux and I still managed to upgrade my Core 2 Duo rig to an Athlon X4 860k. Then again, I'm in Canada, land of free healthcare and other socialist things... But hey, if you can get by with an older PC and make good use of it, I can respect you for that. I know damn well I'm not the most fiscally responsible person, and that I've had to sell things and get by on the kindness of others to survive. It's not something I like to admit, but it is what it is.

Also, I did some research on your board and it looks like it can take up to 4GB of ram. I'm curious as to why your memory is in single channel though. How many sticks of RAM do you have installed? If you have two 1GB sticks, you can easily put them into dual channel for a slight performance boost by putting each one into a slot of a different color, though of course the speed will be restricted by whatever the speed of the slower stick is. More than two sticks, and it can get pretty complicated. If you had four matching sticks installed however, all with the same speed, capacity, and timings, then you wouldn't be having this issue. Three sticks, I'd say you're probably fucked as boards of the time didn't support asymmetric dual channel.
