Hi, I want to buy a cheap PS2 off eBay to softmod it and have it play games off hdd, and shit.

What should I look for? Any specific firmwares to avoid, or the ps2 is just everyone's bitch at this point? Google isn't very clear on this, should I look into particular models or what?

You just need any fat PS2.

The PS1 emulator was blown into the thing's BIOS, so every PS2 is vulnerable and no PS2 can be updated.

You do need a genuine network adapter, though: the HK knockoff ones don't actually have a working network port.
