I'm an anime guy so I'll recommend trying out some independent short films. Yamamura and Mizue are good gateway directors; try Mt. Head or Country Doctor from the former and Wonder from the latter. Work your way out from there, there's a ton of interesting stuff that goes totally unnoticed by the general /a/non.
OP, I've been getting into this kind of stuff myself lately thanks to another thread on here. Check out the graphics in >>9280 and the ascended tiers.
Check out worlds.com and john.com for some fun surrealist experiences.
Animu: Mind Game. Penguindrum. Shorts tend to be more experimental, so watch Genius Party, Robot Carnival, and the recent Animator Expo.
For bizarre black comedy look for the 90s BBC radio show Blue Jam and the TV version Jam.

i remember starting mind game but never finishing it. maybe i'll have a better experience with it now. i want to watch genius party as well, mostly due to the creator of mind game (and kaiba and cat soup!) having his own short in it.
i'm a fan of bizarre black comedy. i'll make sure to check those shows out.
