Because you could mean either up to now or recently and I can't answer the question without knowing for sure.

I must honestly say, all the answers before are pretty damn baseless
>>15639
If you really want essential anime I'd say it would be those:
1. Kujira - first anime to be recognized in the west, won a cannes award
2. Astroboy - the anime that started a revolution in animated tv series
3. Space Battleship Yamato - first space opera anime, started the whole legion of sci-fi anime inspired by star wars
4. Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind - started the influx of experimental anime in the media of film
5. Neon Genesis Evangelion - same as Nausicaa, just for tv series
This list might be pretty useful in general.
>>15945
You are stupid. Just because it was the first to be recognized doesn't mean it has to be seen. bet you never read mein kampf.
>>15949
OP asked for important, those are the most important. So what are you blabering about?
>>15963
Depends on what he means with important. I wouldn't say watching evangelion is important. In that case you should tell the guy to watch dragonball since it's one of the most popular anime in the world. But it's still shit
Shirobako
Gunbuster
Mobile Suit Gundam 0079
Kino no Tabi
Aria
>>15964
Ok, let's do an experiment then. Name your top 10 favorite anime tv series (not movies or ovas).
>>15963
He didn't say important, he said important to watch, that is, anime that it is very important that you watch them. That's not the same thing as a show being important in anime history.
>>15981
>>15978
>>15985
>not movies or OVAs
For what purpose?
Not sure what do you mean with your question, OP. There's no ''most important anime'' to watch because that's entirely based on your preferences.
I'll just give you a list of essential anime in the opinion of most /a/nons(not counting movies):
Tatami Galaxy
Ping Pong
Shinsekai Yori
Kaiba
Katanagatari
Dennou Coil
Legend of the Galactic Heroes
Mononoke
Evangelion
Humanity has Declined
Welcome to NHK
Aria
Mushishi
Utena
Princess Tutu
Kaiji
Kino no Tabi
Lain
Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei
Gankutsuou
Haibane Renmei
Planetes

Non Non Biyori
Haruhi
K-ON
Samurai Champloo
FLCL
Gurren Laggan
Mawaru Penguindrum
Card Cadptor Sakura
Usagi Drop
Maybe I'm forgetting something but that's most likely.
>>15985

>>15945
Are you that fag who posts on 3x3 threads?
>>15993
I won't look it up, but I'm pretty sure that none are.
>>16001
It aired 95 - 96. Now get to your point.
>>16001
>n top of that, there was only one anime series mentioned in the entire thread that aired before 1995
Wrong, Gunbuster and LOGH aired before NGE. Also, many of the anime mentioned here may have aired after NGE, but their source material is older, like Jojo for example.
>>16003
His point should be pretty obvious by now.
>>15639
I think that the answer to that question depends on the genre you're interested in -- so really you should be asking what are the top 5 essential sports anime, or top 5 mecha anime, or whatever. To say that there are a top 5 for the medium as a whole would either miss out on essential anime for a particular genre, or have you watching shows that you're not interested in and that there is little point in you watching them.
>>16011
That only anime before 95 is worth watching?
That is a really stupid point and I hope that's not it
>>16011
Correction, I just remembered that LOGH is a OVA, despite having more than 100 episodes.
>>16014
Are you stupid? He's trying to say that NGE had a huge influence/impact in the anime industry.
>>16001
I get where you're coming from, but older shows don't draw in new viewers, hell most of the older shows we don't even have subs for, nor would most general audiences want to see something that old for lack of advertising or hype behind them. Most people will look at something like Future boy conan, or Space Battleship Yamato and just be turned off by the art. The only "older" shows that get traction from general audiances have fucking GitS or Patlabor movie tier art. Hell even the two examples I brought up are well known for being exteremly good.
>>16011
I think he's a faggot, but he did say no OVA or movies, I know the angle he's going for and it's retarded, but both Gunbuster, and LOGH are OVAs
>>16011
Neither Gunbuster or LotGH are tv series. I'm waiting for the guy that confronted me to answer. I can't believe you're him, since he seemed so confident I bet he'd know such basic facts.
>>16017
kek
>>16001
>People prefer newer over older shows
Stop the presses.
>>16027
So why 1995 specifically. Why will people still mention Utena, Lain or Bebop as their favorite shows even though they aired just a couple of years after but will never mention shows from a couple of years before?
Plus, honestly. If you have to have explained how much of an influence Eva was on the industry you are rather uninformed. Which isn't anything wrong, but trying to act all edgy and contrarian towards such an obvious fact is pretty damn stupid. If you honestly are interested in the medium and want to know just ask. If you're going to be a dick and just act insulted because an anime you didn't like happens to be the most influential in the last 20 years then just should up and keep your presumptions to yourself.
>>16035
I don't believe anyone in the thread ever actually said that Evangelion wasn't hugely influential.
>This fucking thread.
Anything related to anime requests needs its own containment board.
Legend of the Galactic Heroes
Hunter x Hunter 2011
That's all for the essentials.
Was gonna start a new thread but figured I'd ask here. Any suggestions on animes for someone who really liked Boogiepop Phantom? I'd love to find some animes that feel kinda like animated creepypastas.
>>16080
Serial Experiments Lain?
>>16080
>animes
>>15990
>Shinsekai Yori
More like Shin Sekai Yuri. If I want to watch bicurious people making out, I'd stay at my Uni.
>Legend of Gaylactating Homosexual
>Welcome to the NHK,
if I wanted to watch a loser, I would stare at the mirror.
>Aria
A show about NOTHING
>Kaiji
If I wanted to see some pussy bitch cry all day, I'd watch Lifetime.
>Lain
More like Serial Experiments LAME
>Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei
One look and I said sayonara to this piece of shit.
>Haibane Renmei
a boring show about angels fucking around. I liked it better when it was called Evangelion.
>Cowboy Bebop
Shitty ripoff of Trigun
>FLCL
boring, unfunny, LOL SO RANDUM XD shit.
>Kino no Tabi
If I wanted to watch a dyke on a motorcycle, I'd go visit San Francisco instead.
>Samurai Champloo
More like Cowboy Bebop with swords and shitty music.
>Planetes
As empty as space
>Tatami Galaxy
Endless Eight for hipster faggots.
>>16181
Nice pasta
And
>Tatami Galaxy
>Endless Eight for hipster faggots
As much as I liked Haruhi, Endless Eight was pretty shit and frustrating to watch after 1+ hour, whereas this managed to have a fucking meaning behind it whilst showing cause/effect from different perspectives and did not literally repeat the exact same shit over and over
>>16181
>If I wanted to watch a dyke on a motorcycle
ok but how many of them having talking motorcycles
and how many cities in california will teach you absurd philosophical truths (without you having to use all that medical marijuana to your advantage)
>>15639
Clannad
TTGL
Texnolyze
Tatami Galaxy
Welcome to NHK
Since it's impossible to do just five for all anime ever, I'll go with recent, influential picks.
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Revolutionary Girl Utena
Azumanga Daioh
K-On!
Attack on Titan
Should give a starting point for late 90s onward, which is what I've always thought of as "modern" anime.
>>16326
Scratch SnK and put Madoka. Forgot about that one. Alternatively Love Live? It's tough picking something recently important cause we're still living it.
I'm gonna assume you're asking for 5 series to cover all the bases of anime
>full metal alchemist- it's the one anime everyone's seen
>Cowboy Bebop- the critically acclaimed deep and artsy anime, although Evangelion could also work here
>Dragon ball z- to fill the "buff guys punching shit" role
>pokemon- THE kid's anime
>Akira- bitches love akira
>>15639
>I want to fit in on /a/
Eva
Code Geass
TTGL
K-ON
Madoka
>I want to fit in with normalfags
Titans
SAO
Akira
Madoka
Cowboy Bebop
>I never had a childhood
Pokemon
DBZ
Digimon
Sailor Moon
Yugioh
>Best SoL/Romance
Clannad&After Story
Haruhi Melancholy&Disappearance
Toradora
Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo
Golden Time
The five biggest anime of 2015?
Umaru-Chan
Kekkai Sensen
Hibike Euphonium
Shokugeki no Soma
One Punch Man
The five best anime of 2015 not included above?
Yurikuma Arashi
Death Parade
Houkago no Pleiades
Osomatsu-San
Concrete Revolutio
The five biggest anime of the current decade?
Hunter X Hunter
Madoka
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
Attack on Titan
Kill la Kill
The five best anime of the decade not including anything above?
Mawaru Penguindrum
Hyouka
Uchoten Kazoku
Ping Pong
Non Non Biyori
>>16455
I should mention that "decade" only refers to these last five years, but that should be obvious since TTGL/Haruhi/Death Note/Code Geass should still reasonably be considered more popular than a few of those, though the huge boom of animu popularity has probably actually dethroned them
>>15673
Lain is god-tier
Cowboy Bebop
Evangelion
Shin Sekai Yori
Shiki
Monogatari SS
>>16455
>death parade
>good
>umaru-chan and kekkai that high
The bottom quarter of the list is flawless as far as solid shows go minus Hyouka, it's shit, It just looks nice, I'd probably replace it with monthly girls or haikyuu.
>>16500
>shitty CGI sport anime
Good to know you haven't seen it.
>>15639
Mobile Suit Gundam
Legends of Galactic Heroes
Evangelion
Cowboy Bebop
K-On!!
Essential doesn't mean best or favorite. Here's a list based off influence or cultural significance:
Evangelion obviously.
Bebop for Americans, or some other whatever was one of the first anime series to make it big in your country.
A Miyazaki film.
Mobile Suit Gundam, seeing as how pervasive mecha has become in anime.
K-On!, Haruhi, or Lucky Star. You can't deny their influence whether you like them or not.
>Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind - started the influx of experimental anime in the media of film
What the shit am I reading
Legend of the Galactic Heroes
That's it.
Steins;Gate
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Monster
Fullmetal Alchemist 2003
Hunter x Hunter
>>15669
Kys
anyone here like Baccano or Berserk for blood and story?
>>17097
Baccano isn't really a show to watch for the blood. Yeah, it has some bloody moments, but it's more about the plot.
I enjoyed The Woman Called Fujiko Mine
the Baccano time changes/jumps got on my nerves a bit but otherwise great plot and action
for the record Tokyo Ghoul is orgasmic
Evengelion is such an overrated try hard trash
>>16455
>Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
Part 1 and Part 2 aren't even that good to be honest. Reading the manga is more satisfying.
>>16869
The truth. It was created by the people who founded studio ghibli and there was nothing like it before It actually won a noburo ofuji award . It aired in 1984 and 84-88 were the years we had stuff airing like: Angel's Egg, Night on the Galactic Railroad, Robot Carnivale, Neo Tokyo, Do You Rember Love?, Akira and a couple ghibli movies. It was basically a golden age for animated film in Japan.
But honestly, I know this is a request thread but I shouldn't spoonfeed you like that. Maybe type in "anime history" in google and check your facts straight first before you spout those kind of presumptions like a retard.
>>17154
some episodes are absolute fucking shit and the censoring is bad if you don't use the bd
Just watch Inferno Cop.
It's the best.
Anime is subjective. Your top 5 could be some one else's top 5 shittiest anime. Just watch whatever you think looks cool and if its shit then its shit.
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Cowboy Bebop
Azumanga Daioh
Shoujo Kakumei Utena
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
>>15639
To remain current and watch anime that's actually interesting?
No Game No Life
Attack on Titan
Is It Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?
Parasyte
Mushishi
The classics (can't go wrong)
Serial Experiments Lain
Akira
Ghost in the Shell (original version)
Spirited Away
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
Perfect Blue
>>16181
I love this copypasta.
>>16058
this is that containment board you fucking faggot, you cunts ruined /a/ by disallowing even a little bit of requesting and now you cry about it happening in other boards?
kill yourself for real my man
>>15945
desu I feel like this chart ought to include Megazone 23 and Cutey Honey
>>18278
>little bit of requesting
Because /a/ really needs four request threads up right? Mods couldn't delete them fast enough before, now they have an excuse to hand out a three day ban without a warning.
>>18135
the best
the melancholy(/DISAPPEARANCE) of haruhi suzumiya
>>18303
desu I'd rather have request thread than some faggot posting an oneliner about how much they want to sniff underage anime girls butthole. Atleast people talk about anime in these threads.
>>17237
Heh, you've fallen for my spoon card.
I had only read the manga (which didn't seem very experimental).
>>18401
Both of them are still talking about anime, but only one of them are against the rules
>>17237
That's only partially the truth, as Urusei Yatsura Beautiful Dreamer came out the same year (a month earlier in fact), and was more experimental than Nausicaa. A shame they canned Oshii from directing Urusei Yatsura.
>>18695
And before that there were the Animerama films (Belladonna of Sadness, Cleopatra and A Thousand and One Nights).
>>15639
Evangelion
Berserk
Ghibli movies
Legend of the Galactic Heroes
ShinichirÅ Watanabe directed works
1. Cory in the House
2. King of the Hill
3. Shrek 2
4. Johnny Test
5. Bee Movie
>>18763
Sure
>>18278
You're the exact reason anime requests needs its own board. Acquire some reading comprehension and try again.
Oh, and nice meme buzzwords. You must be an oldfag.
Pumpkin Scissors opinions?
personally loved it
>>15639
The key word is essential. So, to spread it out so you get a good base of all genres...
1. My Neighbor Totoro
2. Neon Genesis Evangelion
3. Azumanga Daioh
4. Cowboy Bebop
5. Excel Saga
So, you've got family friendly, mecha/mindfuck, slice of life, action/shonen, then Excel Saga covers humor and all the other genres by parodying them. I'd add Sailor Moon as a 6th to cover shoujo as well as long-run series.
