.FLA file extension isn't working or converting to .SWF even with the latest flash player. Manually changing the file format doesn't work either

None that I know of. Ask the guy to give you the swf instead, unless you actually want to study the original project with all the layers, masks. MovieClips etc intact.
How big is the file?

It is, but it's literally a gig of small hentai animations, so I'll pass. Thanks for the help guys
