Different anon here.
Based off of what I've watched, pretty much everything being recommended there is similar in style to Cowboy Bebop which is adult characters in adult situations acting like adults and dealing with adult problems, which is basically what other people would want coming off of Cowboy Bebop.
Thus, shows like Samurai Champloo, Black Lagoon, Trigun, Baccano!, Space Dandy, Psycho-Pass, Kekkai Sensen, Ghost in the Shell: SAC, Lupin III, Wolf's Rain, and Durarara!! (I'm leaving out a bunch here, since I haven't actually watched them) all fit into a similar kind of place with Cowboy Bebop and are good recommendations.
A lot of those and ones I didn't mention have a loveable small group of characters that go around doing stuff with no real aim. Others do have an aim, but they still manage to have a similar feeling to Cowboy Bebop in tone or atmosphere or characters.
MAL is definitely bad, but writing off the recommendations completely is silly.

That or they just want something sci fi with a noir atmosphere. Don't assume everybody has your tastes. Shows like Cowboy Bebop has a very broad appeal, there's a reason why it's considered entry level, and why it's widely beloved even among entry level shows.
