I just installed the OS and now I need to install steam. I'm running v16.04 and I've tried everything I can find. The app installs, but any attempt to run the damn thing yields nothing. No errors. But the program is running in task manager? Pls hlp

Do you double click on the icon?

Try launching it from a terminal.

Open a term
cd to the directory Steam is installed in
Find the executable and type ./steam
Replace "steam" with the actual name, it might end in .sh if that's any help.

As the program starts up it will spit any error messages out into the terminal.

Alright, I tried. Got the following errors

libGL error: unable to load driver: nouveau_dri.so
libGL error: driver pointer missing
libGL error: failed to load driver: nouveau
libGL error: unable to load driver: swrast_dri.so
libGL error: failed to load driver: swrast

Nouveau is the open-source driver for Nvidia graphics cards. That is what you have, right?

swrast is an OpenGL component and fixing your graphics driver should repair it automagically.

You should consider replacing Nouveau with the closed-source, proprietary Nvidia driver. Proprietary drivers usually have better performance. If you're gaming, you should use them.

This link demonstrates switching to the closed source graphics driver under Ubuntu.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia

Keep in mind that any solution in the Ubuntu forums will probably work for you as well, as you run a derivative of it.
Debian forums might be worth checking out too.

Lemme know if you're still having problems.

I switched to the recommended driver, rebooted, but still no dice.

What's your error message now when you redo the steps in >>152599
>>
>>152669
I can't find the steam directory. I used the install from the site though, if you know where that lead.
>>
>>152669
Just found it. Entering steam.sh results in command not found
>>
I thought installing open source would be frustrating, not damn near impossible. I'm no longer recieving errors, just the GLX extension unsupported.
>>
>>152678
So you found Steam and ran it in terminal again, yeah?
What's the complete output, could you paste it here?

Also, using your terminal, type this:
lspci -nn | grep '\[03'
Post the output.
That will tell us which card you've got.

I've gotta go to bed now, unfortunately.
If the threads' still up when I wake I'll be glad to help.
It might be better installing Windows, ultimately.

Well, you are trying to install a non-open-source program on a third-party distribution that it's not tested on and doesn't support.

If you're a clueless beginner, why in god's name are you trying to do this, when you could just install proper ubuntu and go >apt-get install steam-launcher
>>
>>152678
But if you must insist on being a retard:

cd /tmp/
aptitude update
aptitude install gdebi wget
wget http://repo.steampowered.com/steam/archive/precise/steam_latest.deb
gdebi steam_latest.deb
>>
>>152749
All packages in Ubuntu are also in Xubuntu
>>
>>152813
Clearly not, or Steam would have installed its dependencies correctly.
>>
>>152902
Works fine on my machine
>>
>>152908
So give your machine to OP, and everyone will be happy.
