Can anyone give me any ideas why my hdmi display is not displaying anything when i plug in my 2nd display which is a vga cord with a dvi adapter? my other main 2nd monitor which is dvi died a day ago and only having one is pretty depressing

Sure!
VGA is analogue
HDMI is digital
DVI can transport analogue and digital at the same time, as it was intended to phase-out VGA.
If you use a VGA/DVI adapter, it outputs an analogue signal on the DVI cable's analogue pins.
If you use a DVI/HDMI adapter, it expects a digital signal on the DVI cable's digital pins.
(pic related).
You need to use a VGA port on your display, or a proper DVI-D/DVI-I port on your computer.

thank you
any idea why the vga/dvi adapter + hdmi worked for the last 2 days but decided to stop working?

No idea.
HDMI does not have analogue pins, and VGA does not have digital pins, so it should never have worked in the first place.

i think u might has misunderstood me, i have a hdmi and dvi port, main monitor was hdmi, 2nd was dvi
dvi monitor is dead now, so i went back to a old monitor that is vga so i was u sing a vga to dvi adapter, and all of the sudden my hdmi monitor wont display an hdmi signal if the vga/dvi adapter is plugged in, but it worked for 2 days
