When I download torrents at home they download fine, but at college they never get past the calculating stage, and I'm pretty sure it's nothing to do with bandwidth. What can I do?

Try harder. Look into anonymous torrent clients that use the TOR network. Unless your lot has blocked all the TOR exit nodes that will probably work.
