Can you recommend something to someone who doesn't watch a lot of anime? I watched Death Note, Space Dandy, Sword Art Online (which I disliked) and Steins;Gate (which I couldn't get into). I'd prefer something that isn't too old. I'm also more of a SciFi guy than fantasy/magic. So guys, can you recommend me something?

Banana ice cream is the best ice cream you could ask for.
Don't fall for chocolate ice cream. It tastes just like it looks.

Best sci-fi you can watch for starters:
Ghost in the Shell - psychological, action, cyberpunk
Serial Experiments Lain - surreal, psychological cyberpunk
Neon Genesis Evangelion - surreal, psychological, mecha
Casshern Sins - post-apocalyptic, stylized art
Kaiba - Mind-uploading, far future, stylized art
Angel's Egg - Has sci-fi elements in its setting but is more like a surreal poem about the nature of faith, it's also fuckin beautiful.
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind - post-apocalyptic setting, if you like Morrowind or the works of Moebius you should check it out.
FLCL - has sci-fi elements, but is more of a post-modern spectacle which mixes absurd humor with melancholy really well.

Towards E Terra for that classical Sci-fi feel
Then there was that Anime about space Hercules doing his 12 tasks while battling the zero, look it up.
Galactic Heroes is also pretty good.

>space Hercules doing the 12 tasks while battling the zerg
Damn autocorrect

If you want dark, violent, gritty, Tarantino-esque action, Black Lagoon is fucking amazing.
>>
Try Cowboy BeBop its a little older than most animes but is pretty cool i guess if you want stuff with space and more
>>
If you want casual enjoyment stuff, then:
>Cowboy Bebop
From the same director as Space Dandy but is a lot more toned down and serious. Described as a "sci-fi western," but has a lot of noir influence as well. Excellent soundtrack.
>Psycho Pass
Dystopian sci-fi series created by Gen Urobucchi. It's part futuristic crime procedural, part mystery/thriller. Very gory.
>Darker Than Black
Huge disaster hits earth, some people end up with powers and they work as mercenaries. Not a very good description, you could think of it as X-men with a noir bent to it, maybe.
>Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Cyberpunk crime drama based on the classic film/manga of the same name. Very dialogue heavy, lots of political intrigue and philosophical tracts, but has spectacular animation where it counts.

There's lots of other stuff to try if you want to leave your comfort zone though.

>OP says hes into scifi
>but doesn't want anything too old

Nigga, are you even listening to yourself? The 90's and 80's were the pique of scifi anime and after early to mid 00's the genre dwindled out a lot. Now you only get the occasional show and they're not always very good. Your best bet is honestly going to be older series like Dirty Pair, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Outlaw Star, etc.

His only exposure to anime is stuff from the mid 00s and onward, so the production values of stuff from the 90s and earlier is probably going to be jarring to him. Contrary to what nostalgiafags claim, anime production quality has only improved over time, and there is a noticeable cliff in quality once you go further back than like 1997.

What you had more of back then though were very high quality OVA series, but the TV anime were mostly dogshit with only a few gems as standouts.

>Bebop is a little older than most animes
>animes
>Bebop came out in 1998
>is a little older than most animes
>the first anime appeared on the scene in 1958
>but its older than most animes
>animes

First of all, the word anime is simultaneously plural and singular at the same time. You don't need to add the 'S' and it just makes it obvious that you have no idea what you're talking about.

Second of all, Cowboy Bebop is much more recent then, say, Astro Boy and the plethora of anime that came out before 98. And lastly, Bebop's visuals were so ahead of its time that it stands up against even anime airing right now so its age is in no way a negative. Educate yourself, my brother.

But I do second this suggestion because it is a solid SciFi series and because its something casuals can enjoy. Theres no point in suggesting something like Legends of the Galactic Heroes to someone who isn't all that into anime in the first place.

>The 90's and 80's were the pique of scifi anime
You mean peak.
>>
>>114472
Legend of the Galactic Heroes is actually above average for its time, even if the production values would be considered shoddy by modern standards. In some ways though I consider it superior to many modern anime, namely in character design.
>>
>>114470

I've been watching anime since the 90's and I think everything has its warrant. Whereas modern series usually have outstanding visuals with only a few low budget denominators here and there, the characterization and storytelling aren't always the greatest. Whereas the 90's may not have had the BEST animation, it often showcased great great characters with the plot quality all over the place. The 80's on the other hand seemed to have the strongest storytelling, decent characters and occasionally really questionable visuals.

The 00's were a weird time for anime when the studios were just getting the hang of digital animation, the most popular series were shifting from action based to ones involving cute girls through either comedy or romance and the industry was just coming down from the height of anime popularity in Western countries.

I can watch pretty much anything with the exception of mecha which is why I stay away from the 80's and earlier for the most part but I don't think one decade is any better than the other. Like I said, they all have good points and bad points. If OP has good taste for scifi then the visuals shouldn't matter too much but I certainly wouldn't blame him for being put off either. All I'm saying is that for the best of that genre he's going to have to go back further and you're right about OVAs being where the real shit was at back then.

Same with me.
Would recommand shorter series that are easier to get into.
> Zetsuen no Tempest.
>>
>>114507

The first half of Tempest was really good but the second half fell short. It was definitely worth the watch but I just wish that the story could have kept up the level of excitement

Akira, Evangelion and Ghost in the Shell are the classics you have to see.
Watch Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood if you haven't yet, if anime was a drug it would be the weed
