A cup changes depending on what it's a cup of.

The whole thing's retarded, particularly when it's used to measure powders: their density depends on how much they settle, so you can measure a cup, whack the measure a few times, and now your cup is less than a cup.

Nope, it's a rough measurement easily available everywhere, and if your cup is different, it doesn't matter much. You still need to check the consistency/taste/whatever and adjust accordingly.
