What's a good anime about a depressed protagonist? Also, not sure how to explain but it should be serious and not involve out of character humor.

I didn't like Welcome to NHK because it had surreal elements and didn't represent a socially anxious person accurately. And there was humor in it. I'm not talking about in character humor, but out of character humor. What I'm looking for is a film in the form of anime.

I read it thoroughly. Even though NHK has some dumb moments with the conspiracy bullshit, it still has a lot of merit in showing how trapped a depressed person can feel. It hit me really hard the first time I watched it.

I can think of lots with surreal elements but none that are realistic. Your best bet would probably to look at older (80s and 90s) anime which are generally more serious than comedic in nature
