The only real justification I can think of is: "It's not an ad, they didn't require that I publicly comment or thank them or anything, they were just kind enough to send me some free stuff!" And, honestly, this doesn't bother *me* too much. Everyone understands exactly what is happening when these people tweet about getting free stuff. These companies aren't sending this stuff out of the kindness of their hearts, it's very much a wink-wink-nudge-nudge tit-for-tat situation.
They're not ads; certainly not by any legal or strict definition. But everyone understands that they're a form of "you scratch my back, I scratch yours". They're "promoting" a product/company in exchange for free stuff. I don't think too many people have much of a problem with this either, so long as it's not getting too desperate (see >>1169315).
The problem comes when you have people like TB who are painting themselves into a corner about what they consider acceptable or not. See his recent video in which he stated that if you need to fall back on technicalities to excuse your behaviour, your participating in shitty behaviour. Adblock is fucking fantastic. It sucks that it hurts producers, but it's one of those things that is almost undeniably in the "never use the internet without it" category. And it's very hard to persuade any given individual to switch it off - we *know* that the revenue generated by any given view is on the order of fractions of cents, yet the cost is upwards of 30 seconds of our time. The cost/time ratio is beyond horrid, so it's easy for the individual to justify that their tiny drop in the bucket alone is insignificant. Because it is.
Here's the thing though - notice the different ways in which various producers talk about ad blockers. There are two main groups:
The first group levels with us. Internet ads are shit, ad blockers are a god send, the cost/time ratio for the viewer is a terrible deal ... but that's just the way it is right now. They say they don't blame you for using ad blocking software, but ask if you might be willing to donate and/or purchase some merch (either of which is likely going to cover years worth of ad views anyway), etc.
The second group calls you a cunt for using ad blockers.
Maybe I'm being a bit too harsh to judge, but TB seems to fit more in the latter category here. I can only sympathise with the "we've tried various monetisation methods, and people complain regardless" appeal to a point - nobody likes ads very much, you're going to get people who dislike pretty much any form of advertising/monetisation you try. Does he really think he's going to stumble upon some holy grail monetisation scheme which generates no complaints from anybody?
It's probably fair enough to be pissed off that ~50% (or whatever the value is now) of your audience is circumventing (indirect-) payment for your product. But given that this kind of product is significantly personality driven ... well, your grumbling about how ungrateful/entitled your audience is may well be doing more to harm the situation than help it.
