What's your price limit on buying games?
For me, it's about $140~. Anything above that I just emulate.

I have a really hard time playing through to the ending of RPGs. I've started so many and failed to complete them. I could probably count the number of /vr/ RPGs I've completed on my two hands, and they're mostly pokemon games.
Which RPGs have grabbed your attention enough for you to complete it? Do you have the same problem I do? I was thinking of taking a stab at the first Final Fantasy because I've heard its relatively short, and that would probably help my efforts.
Thoughts?
Final Fantasy is pretty short but there are shorter ones. Chrono Trigger and Panzer Dragoon Saga jump right to mind.
>>3286394
What, specifically, do you find boring about JRPGs? Do you find that the traditional turn-based combat doesn't cut it for you and you need something more? Do you feel like sometimes they focus too much on story without much interesting stuff going on in terms of gameplay? Do the settings bore you?
In my experience, RPGs in general get less and less appealing as you grow older because you neither have the patience nor the free time anymore. I'm on the same boat, tried to fight it and I couldn't so now I just accept I'm getting old.
Which early era 3D games have aged remarkably well? By which I mean, which fully 3D games (no pseudo-3D/2.5D) can be played for the first time in 2016 and be adapted to very easily without having to put on a "this is old, get used to it" mindset?

Played Blast Corps for the first time yesterday. It's great.

Bosses you just cant seem to beat, even as an adult
The music they brought in the NES era are simply orgasmic and literally made me approach videogames as a toddler with that sick shit.

Find a flaw.

Every game on the SNES is inherently worse than it could have been if it were released on a different console.
>>3285339
lmao, slammed
>>3285339
It makes anti-Nintendofags mad. I don't know why because it's been ported to everything by now.
Is this game actually as good as everyone says?
Yeah
Combat is fun, characters are likable, isnt grindy, story is focused, music is good, etc

I like Doom
Do you like Doom?
>>3284612
Doom is the tits.
So I'm playing this for the first time and having lots of fun. Why does nobody ever talk about it?
StarTropics general.

>>3284546
>why doesn't anyone talk about StarTropics?
Because Mike isn't in Super Smash Bros so the Nintendo fags don't give a shit.
>>3284546
first boss felt like bullshit to me, how about you?
About to play this beautiful-ass game for the first time. What "new-to-you" old games do you have coming up?
I'm playing through Tomb Raider 2 for the first time. Gonna start Tomb Raider 3 at some point.
>>3283845
Awesome. I hope you have a blast. I'm like 10 minutes in and can't get over how pretty this game is.
None. I missed out on a few notable titles like Metroid and Mother and I'm okay with that. I really don't give a shit. There's nothing I can do about it now, anyway. Playing these games at this point wouldn't be the same for me as it was for all the kids who played them during their hayday.
Who are the smugest characters?
Kirishima Mana-san
>>3283027
She's from that Evangelion VN on the Saturn, right? Is there an English patch for that?
>>3283037
Yes, Iron Maiden.
There's an english translation for PC.
Pic related, Dinosaurs can open doors and leap over fences. Also, there's a way to get instantly killed by a cliff collapsing if you do things in the wrong order.
>dinosaurs can open doors
>a core mechanic of this game
literally everyone who ever played dino crisis found this out
>Post game tidbits you think you are the only one to have found
In Resident Evil, the statues you have to push down in the mezzaine 1st floor west side, you can safely knife zombies through the statues. Also works in REmake.
Also in the courtyard, dogs can't hit you if you stand on the elevators. If you stand at the right spot and with a good timing you can knife the dogs as they are jumping to bite you but are stopped by an invisible wall just in front of the elevator.
Then, when you come back to the mansion and there...

It's only triggered at certain doors, and only under specific circumstances.
are you ashamed of something you got wrong all these years about old games?
i always thought earthworm jim was shamelessly trying to rip off rayman, turns out it came out a year before

Verbatim what I came here to post
It's the Berenstain of video games
When did NiGHTS become the definitive Saturn game? I had a Saturn since 1995, and the only two titles that got any real buzz on the system were VF2 and Sega Rally. I know the system did a lot better in Japan, but looking at Japan's top 10 best selling Saturn games, Nights isnt even there. So where did the revisionist history come from?
>>3275872
Because the Sonic fandom says so
>>3275872
I remember A family friend gave me a Saturn that they won in a contest. It had a Nights Demo CD that I thought looked amazing. Unfortunate this was in 1999 or so and there were absolutely no Saturn games to buy in my Mall.
The only reason I wanted a Saturn was because of NiGHTS. That was the one game was going to be the system seller for me. But I ended up getting a Saturn a few years later in the 2000s.
>revisionist history
Maybe you live in 3rd world or something.

This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!
>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
