Does /vr/ bother with any emulated console arcade collections, or do you guys prefer your own emulation setup on your computers?
I've heard some bad things about the quality of emulation in some of these collections, namely that RNG might be fucked up. For instance, I think Gauntlet's code is supposed to generate levels in a random order, but the levels occur in a deterministic order on the collections instead.
>>3303501
they run fine
sometimes they do remastered versions or in-screen cabinet borders, so be aware of what you are playing.
Most of the time it's an honest version though.
>In the case of Virtual racer I preferred the update
Atari, Midway, Tecmo, Konami, Capcom, Namco, Taito, Williams etc do some great compilations.
The Sega compilations can be updates, not sure if they let you play original.
My recommendation is the SNK, all that Neogeo greatness...

Depends on the collection.
That said, it was nice to finally be able to play Legend of Valkyrie in English.
>>3303501
Paperboy is a little fucked up on that PS1 collection. Rest of them seem to play okay though. Although I've never played the arcade versions though.
Did you have an NES Advantage? What games did you use it on?
I refurbished mine just this weekend. I used to use it for everything. As an adult I now realize how terrible it is for most games, but for shooters, it's sublime. Kinda fun to use with arcade fighters like Ninja Turtles, too.
>>3303449
Yes, I had one. I also used it for everything. We especially liked it because all you had to do was flip the switch and it was player 2.
I never had one as a kid, but I have been debating buying one on ebay recently. So thanks for posting the relevant games behind the stick.
>>3303528
They're pretty cheap as I recall. Do it before some YouTube celebrity makes a video about one and drives the price up to 50 bucks a pop.
Dragon Spirit in particular benefits from the turbo feature. Most bosses get absolutely wrecked in a matter of seconds.
>>3303490
Yeah, my brother and I didn't have any co-op 2-player games as I recall. Most were taking turns, so the switch was great. The switch also made bringing Zelda's save menu up...

Must be controller controllable and preferable big icons or text.
Lakka is what you'll probably go with. It's much more attractive than RetroArch although Hyperspin is the coolest IMHO

>What's your dad like?
He's all around pretty boring. He's obsessed with hockey and football, WWI, etc. The only game my dad used to be OBSESSED with was Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. He was able to get to one of the last bosses before Robotnik. He hasn't really played any games since.
>What retro-vidya you playing with him today?
..None.

>Let's celebrate dad and share some father's day related, retro-gaming stories/experiences!
I never played video games with him. When he was forced to look after me while my mom worked and I was still young, he'd lock me in the attic so he could smoke weed and pass out on the couch.

My dad lives in a different state now, but he generally keeps up with PC releases and my gaming computer growing up was built from his hand-me-down parts, but retro-related, when I was born, he had an NES and then we eventually got a PS1, and I rarely played multiplayer games with him so much as watched him beat things I was too young to get a hang of, like the original Tomb Raider.
Does this really make sense to you?
I feel that having FBZ after CNZ hinders the overall experience of the game.
>>3302071
Maybe Eggman has a base in Carnival Night, that he launches Flying Battery out of?
But... Icecap comes after CNZ?
Yeah originally the snowboard was meant to be the plane door that you bust out of flying battery.
That's a though one. Both have obvious ups and downs. Neither is the one.
I feel like they wasted the colors in the SGB version on the ui like the hearts and second character, when they could've used them better on the ingame screen, which managed the gbc better.
I always play the DKL series with the GBC. Put I prefer the red/green color palette.
>>3302081
it's a good idea to avoid settings that use different palettes for background and sprites
I really enjoyed a no-save runthrough of Resident Evil 2. It really lent a breath of fresh air because the game just wasn't challenging or scary for me anymore. But it made encounters actually threatening because I would lose all my progress, and I also had to change how my inventory was sorted. I could never move between save rooms without healing items, or how you planned item acquisition.
Plus I almost fell apart in the final battle, but I pulled it off. Such a good feeling.
I've tried this with Dino Crisis, and enh.. I don't like the insta-death...

Oh yeah, and what campaign do you like better?
I think I prefer Claire. But I have a thing for chicks in games. Even so, I'm pretty sure the Sherry Birkin/The mayor who hunted women/the reporter plotline was the best.
Ada was just fucking stupid. But Mr.X was a good monster.
>>3300573
>Are there more fun video game challenge runs?
Four Job Fiesta?
You could always try a low % Megaman X. That'd be uh, no helmet, no subtanks, no hearts, no armour. Just the required Maverick guns and the electric slide.
You could also tack on only using regular buster with that. It'd make a few bosses tricky, like armadillo, octopus and Mandrill.
hi /vr/. i recently started acquiring some n64 carts i wanted as a kid but never had. most are in great condition and all of them play perfectly, but a few have some grime to them like pic related. is there any kind of soap/cleaner etc. i should use (or more importantly Not use) to spruce them up? is there anything you have had success with when trying to remove sharpie from plastic?
>>3300530
Isopropyl Alcohol cleans up the gray cart plastic pretty good -- but it *will* mess up the labels if you are not careful. Just go slow and don't rush it.
As for the contacts, I've had some success with using "contact cleaner" (from a spray can) and a q-tip. There are a couple of carts I still have not been able to fire up, even with the cleaner. I bought the security bit required to open then up and plan to give them a thorough cleaning with brasso (which I heard does a better job).
The only trick I know is to remove yellowing. Submerse the cart in hydrogen peroxide and expose it to uv light while soaking. After a day or two of that, scrub. Remove the PCB first obviously. See "retro bright"
>>3300530
Soap and water, then I follow by buffing heavily with NOVA Plastic Cleaner.

This game any good? Thinking about picking it up on PSN.
It's kinda shallow and short. You might as well just emulate it and see for yourself before blowing the cash on it.
Not worth buying, just emulate it. Shallow and infinite continues makes it easy.
>>3300171
>Thinking about picking it up on PSN.
Who cares? No one needed to know that. Off yourself.
Admit it, you used the infinite items glitch.

>$700 in 1993
>every other console was $250 or less
What were they thinking?
>>3299643
I remember the CD-i demanding a similar price when it first came out. I can remember as a kid going into Montgomery Ward and playing that Zelda ripoff game and being blown away by it for some reason. I begged my mom for a CD-i all the way up to Christmas as I was continually told that it was too expensive. I got my SNES that year. Thank god they inflated the prices of those shitty cd based consoles..
>>3299643
That people would pay it. It's funny as hell, because I remember those, the CD-i and other systems over $400 and laughing.
The 3DO, CDi, Jaguar, and even Saturn were all premature. They were released when the 4th gen systems were still going strong with no signs of stopping.
The PS1 and N64 were the only consoles of that generation that ever had a chance because they were released when people were finally ready for new consoles.

Pretty neat machine, bought me a non-working one from a thift store for $5 with most of the original box. Had it working for a while but its having board issues.
>>3299270
Oh hai mark.
Anyone have one of these? There's one sitting at my local recycle shop for about $105. They look cool but from what I've read the library is lackluster.
I've never played one let alone know of any games, but if it's in good condition id probably buy it anyway. if worse comes to worse you could resell.
Is it really worth it holding onto for a few months in the hopes of possibly making $50?
I wouldn't bother with it unless you're a collector.
>>3297550
Most of the games that sold the system in Japan were dating sims. Thus, unless you understand moonglyphs and like 90s-era dating sims, you probably won't like the majority of the game library. That being said, there are quality titles for the system that aren't dating sims:

Farland Story and Der Langrisser are probably my two favorites from that list.

Metal Slug 3 is an amazing game.
But it's rife with bullshit.
I 1CC'd it ONE time and it was the most intense gaming session I've ever done.
Once I did that I basically dropped it. MS1 and X are much less stressful.
