Did retro RPGs and Strategy/Sim games age better, at least in regards to PC games? Whenever people start talking about retro PC games it seems like RPGs and strategy games are all that gets discussed for the most part. Maybe it's just my ignorance - I never had a PC until end of middle school around 2001 - but aside from Doom, Half-Life and Quake you don't hear about a lot of action/shooter games for the PC before 2000/2001ish. It always seemed like RPGs dominated the PC throughout the 90s, so were there just not a lot of action games? Or did they not age as well as...

Jesus, there is a game I haven't seen in years.
As for non RPGs, it probably is due to the length of the games. Most old shootets and whatnot just weren't that long or replayable without multuplayer. Whereas RPGs, RTS, sim, and city builders all had tons of content and/or replayability. The big name retro RPGs all have loads of content to discover and different ways to build characters and parties.
>>3309751
But there must be more than just a few action/shooter games that are worth playing even if they're short or lack replayability? Very few ever get mentioned or recommended tho
>>3309462
RPGs I think just hold up better as are enjoyable even with wonky controls
Plus they age far better compared to early shooters/action games
Though there are great action oriented games like Red Storm, Marathon, Hexen, Heretic, Blood, Dark Forces, Super Stardust, System Shock, an others.

How are ye celebrating?

Finally got around to playing this on the model 3 emulator last night. Lots of fun, even if the emulation is still off. Anyone get to try this in the arcade or any other model 3 games? I played Lost World way back when it released around the movie and loved it. I'll probably check it on supermodel.
>>3308342
> There have been arcades in the last fifteen years that DIDN'T have Star Wars Trilogy
Fuck
>>3308342
Yes I tried it but it's difficult and cost almost $1 per play. Model 3 games where very expensive. Some model 3 game I've always wanted to try are Magical Truck Adventure and SpikeOut since they have very nice graphics.

What are some based as fuck third party devs?
mario
Aside from Imagic?
Activision, Bally Midway(Published by CBS Electronics and Sega), and Starpath(the Supercharger games) all produced great games.

So I sa this obscure Capcom fighter yesterday inside a place called Punch Bowl Social in Detroit.
It's called Ring of Destruction, and it's a wrastlin' game. Some of the characters appear to tye into final fight and street fighter, but I've never heard or seen this game talked about.
Sooo... whatcha know bout that Ring o Destruction?
Holy shit, these defeat screens are hilarous.

I remember him from YTPs, yeah - but those aren't retro nor games.

Yeah, guy sold me his CD-i for $20 a few years back, I only got it for the novelty, ended up finding review copies of Faces of Evil and Wand of Gamelon on eBay for cheap a little while later.

How are you supposed to beat the late missions in Dune 2?
The nuclear destroys my whole base out of nowhere.
Build a secondary base far away from your original base. The AI is full retard and will continue throwing the missiles at your original base.
Spread your buildings a bit with concrete slabs or hope for Death Hands to miss, then build secondary base. The starting zone is too small to build a full proper base anyway.
Playing the game as Harkonnen on your first playthrough would have made it easier : that's one less Death Hand hurling palace you'd have to face.

even in AoE2 single player campaigns you see this behaviour still, and all olders RTS too ofc, unles some i havent played
but i always considered usign such tactics as cheating
Which one is your faviourite Fire Emblem? Also, are you excited for the new translation? http://serenesforest.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=63676&page=1
Of the retro ones I've played 2, 4, and the ds remakes of 1 and 3. Genealogy is definitely the best. I love it's huge sense of scale. Gaiden kinda sucks and the remakes are alright. I'm hoping a decent translation of Thracia is finished in my lifetime.

Let's have a thread for the greatest sword wielder in all of video games. Rastan thread! Let's discuss this Taito classic.
>>3306745
The owner of my local arcade says he's going to get Rastan soon, along with Black Tiger from Capcom.
I was playing Warrior Blade on MAME the other day, another cool games that uses the multi-screen cabinet, like Darius and Ninja Warriors.

Friendo and I used to get baked and MAME this up around 2001.

They'd be good memories if I could remember 'em.
Has anybody here tried using a Raspberry Pi as a front end for their living room? I just got one and am having a lot of trouble with input lag, just wanted to check if this shit is normal or just me and if anyone knew exactly how to fix it, every where I go I see different answers on the subject.
>>3305792
Check the retropies/recallbox documentation. Also check your Tv has "game mode"option would help.
RPi doesn't intrinsically have any worse "input lag" than any other PC. It's either your TV or your controllers.

I know Sega discussion is frowned upon on /vr/, but I just wanted to say this is the most addicting arcade game ever. I'd dare say the greatest light-gun game ever (okay HOTD 2 is better but still). Still is a blast to play with a mouse as much as it is with the gun.
So ligh-gun games general? Again, sorry for bringing up Sega.
>I know Sega discussion is frowned upon on /vr/
>sorry for bringing up Sega.
What? when?
We've had several light gun threads before and we love Sega games, are you okay?
HotD1 and 2 are great, 3 and 4 were just okay but still fun.
Huge Virtua Cop fan too.
Not retro but another good Sega one is Ghost Squad.

Dafuq? There's always Sega threads, you mongoloid.

It's actually some BS some shitposters are trying to force. Like the "bleeps and farts" shitposter, that guy doing the consolewar thread, etc. Used to be a time when the moderation team would delete such crap on sight. Now they don't, the shitposters know it, so they are trying to fuck the board up.
I have a love for fanmade remakes of old PC games, as well as things that "upgrade" those games.
Some examples of remakes:
>Freeciv
>OpenTTD
>Ur-Quan Masters
And then there are things like Exult, which lets you play Ultima VII on Windows without an emulator, gives you lots of options and a few bugfixes, and so on.
Are there any others you can think of that are worth picking up? There's something about the combination of old school games and so-called...

FreeOrion and lincity would both count, right?
There's also the Streets of Rage Remake on PC too. I think they got C&D'ed, but you can find copies of it floating around.
I'm not sure if it counts as a fan remake since I believe the project involved one or more of the original developers, but there was a remake of Star Soldier for Windows entitled SoldierForce. It's freeware, but the official site is no longer around, so you'll have to track it down somewhere else.
There's also an open-source implementation of the Arx Fatalis engine called Arx Libertatis. I believe the intention was to address some of the game's unpatched bugs, as well as to provide cross-platform support.
As for upgrades, the Ultima upgrade...

Hi /vr/, got a question
Through a friend's brother I've recently come into possession of a sizable box of genesis games. They all play just fine (aside from Virtua Racing, can't get get that to work on anything) but the carts themselves are in pretty bad shape. Most of the labels are bubbling, stained or otherwise damaged, and some of the carts have deep scratches or gouges.
Is there a solution to this beyond "buy another cart of the same game"? They work just fine, just I don't know if there's a market for actual cartridge shell...

>Is there a solution to this beyond "buy another cart of the same game"?
No. You could consider printing label replacements, but that's going to be a costly setup in itself.
I don't think Genesis labels were of particularly good quality in the first place. They seem to fade and peel from the slightest bit of handling.
The dimensions and pictures for the labels can be found online for replacements. There's no "market" for it, because a replacement label makes the game no longer a collectible. But the resources are out there to do it yourself for a replacement.
Actual discourage practice due to purists.
