20 years ago today the Nintendo 64 and Super Mario 64 were released in Japan.

Awh shit.
I love goldeneye, super smash bros, podracing, rogue squadron
>>3311735
that's an okay box
I had a Nintendo 64 growing up, so recently I've been giving this console a shot and seeing what I missed.
Granted, it does 2D/prerendered stuff all right, but what the fuck is with the 3D? Every polygon and texture just jitters all over the place. You never know where the devs intended anything to be because all it takes is a slight camera movement to knock everything out of position.
Who thought this was acceptable? Even the fucking Jaguar didn't have these issues, and that came out over a year before. There already existed 3D arcade games in the late '80s that didn't do this shit. So how did they fuck this thing up so bad?
And some people prefer the PS1's 3D over the N64's? Fucking why? PS1 is a bullshot console, plain and simple.

Watch as the right wobbles out of existence
>You were born into the universe where the Light World and Dark World dungeons didn't have swapped themes.

This shit is way better than the generic sounding Dark World variant and it only plays in 3 dungeons...
>>3311179
meh

I prefer the Dark World one.
The light world dungeon theme always seemed boring to me, whereas the dark world dungeon theme seemed a lot more tense. Not really sure why. Probably the strings.
What's the ideal way to play the first two Rayman games?
Is PSX the best for both?
>>3311084
The ps1 version of Rayman 2 is complete fucking trash, literally the worst version of the game that exists
Get the PC, Dreamcast, or N64 version instead
>>3311084
Definitely the dreamcast for 2, it has much higher resolution textures than the 64 version and the ps1 version is awful.
For the first game the sound was better on the ps1 version than the saturn, I'm doubting you'd want to play the original 3do version.
PC obviously. But if you only want to play on console then it's Playstation X for the first one and Dreamcast for the second. If you don't have a Dreamcast then the PS2 version is acceptable, but inferior.
ITT discuss classic arcade games you've either beaten or have attempted to beat on a single credit (like God intended). Anything you're stuck on? Particularly proud of? Share with us.
I've been working on a few arcade ports, but the ones I've been stuck on lately are Tower of Doom and Shadow over Mystara, two excellent games I unfortunately suck at. Hope springs eternal, but I'm still at the stage where I die pretty early on pretty consistently.
>>3310909
>arcade ports
why not just play the arcade originals
>>3310909
Those are on my list. I had a Tower of Doom machine at the local pizza joint (as well as a Star Wars pinball) but I sadly barely ever got out there and now it's gone.
I'm stuck on Night Slashers right now. I've 1CCed a few console titles, but arcade games remain elusive.
Time Crisis 2, 4, Razing Storm
House of the Dead 1-3
Mushihimesama
Dodonpachi
Raiden Fighters
All I got, nothing impressive.
Is it really the worst retro videogame of all time?
>>3310807
It's actually pretty good. People used to like it before AVGN said it was bad.
>>3310810
Fuck you. I played this way before AVGN was even a thing and it was garbage.
>>3310817
Most licensed Atari games were "garbage" because most of them made no sense without the instructions otherwise they would be "meh".
So how bad is King's Quest 8? I just finished 6 and I'm about to start 7 and nearing the end of myquestto replay King's Quest 1-4, and then play 5 and beyond which I've never played before. I did something similar with Ultima last year, but after trudging through the abomination that was Ultima 8 and not even finding the motivation to attempt 9, I'm a little wary of playing yet another Origin game numbered 8 that I've always heard incredibly mixed and bad things about.
Also if anyone wants to talk King's Quest, or Quest games...

>, I'm a little wary of playing yet another Origin game numbered 8
But it's a Sierra game. They didn't have anything to do with each other since Origin was founded.
Personally I liked Ultima 9. 8 was a disaster in terms of gameplay, controls, story and more but 9 actually plays and looks quite well and mainly the story sucks.
>>3310812
Fuck you're right, what the hell have I been smoking?

What are your thoughts on Valkyrie Profile?
One of my favorite RPGs
>>3310641
Way too early in the thread for bait this low-effort. You can do better
Couldn't get into the series. Shitty localization put me off. I don't know what the localization department over at Enix was smoking during the fifth gen, especially considering their earlier localizations were nowhere near as bad.
>>3310639
I thought it was pretty good, but the random crashes in the Seraphic Gate drove me up the fucking wall. Voice acting ranged from good to hilariously bad. The gameplay was pretty repetitive, but fun. Actually being able to explore dungeons a bit instead of running from point A to point B like in most RPGs was nice.
One of the few games I've played with inverted difficulty. Hard mode was the easiest.
ITT playstation JRPGs that aren't boring, actually have good story/characters/plot and an interesting combat system.
pic related- only this, dank cloud and persona 2 are the only JRPGs I ever truly enjoyed.

Are we being trolled?
What is your favourite part about retro gaming?
Having fun and not being hand-held between cinematic set pieces.
they're games

What does this logo mean?
It has made appearances since the first game and no official explanation has ever been given.
>>3310369
Do you have to assign meaning to everything? It's just a fucking logo.
>>3310369
It's just that, a logo.
As far as I know it has no meaning other than being a logo for smash. It probably was going to be for the original game before nintendo decided that using characters from their other IPs was a better idea (The beta testing version used their other IP's models as stand ins)
It does kinda look like the twinkle as your character gets blown off the screen though.
Japan + Scandinavia maybe?
Has /vr/ played Ghostbusters II (NES)? What did you think of it?
A bit of a polarizing game, but I enjoyed it. Very challengeing.
>>3310135
bitch this ain't monday
>>3310135
it's a SHITLOAD OF FUCK! WHAT WERE THEY THINKING???
the master system and genesis games are the only good ones
>live in finland
>watch game chasers/game hunting vids on youtube
>"5bucks for mario 3! Thats way too much man"
>look up finnish auction sites and flee markets
>all retro games 20-30euros minimum, systems range from 60-100euros with no controllers incl.
Thank god for emulation, finding any retrostuff here is like striking gold
It's pretty much the reality every where else that's not America.
>>3309847
or japan. japan is so cool when it comes to retro shit I've found out with Gamecenter cx.
>>3309847
>It's pretty much the reality every where else that's not America.
Strangers will bug you here too. I don't have public transportation in my area, but as far as waiting rooms goes, yeah. Plenty of people eager to sit next to me and tell me all about their life story and / or current physical ailments, even if the conversation is completely unsolicited.
What co-op NES/SNES games gave you the most grief when your partner screen killed you, friendly fired, stole weapons/items, jacked your extra lives?

Did you...correct them?
At this point, anyone remotely interested in digitized fighting games heard of Galloping Ghost and the pending release of its sole title "Dark Presence," but the story goes even deeper than what pending reports have suspecting. The game's history goes all the way back to December, 1998. Gathering from the screenshots archived from that time (bear in mind a few links are broken), production appeared to have begun way back then before the creator(s) scrapped everything and started over.
You can browse any of the archived links from gallopingghost.com, but...

1998 is retro, yes. Check the rules, no need to ask.

Good to know.
Anyway, enjoy some beta screenshots.
