I would recommend Metal Slugs 1 through 3 for 1cc escapades and at least one playthrough on 4 through 6... I don't think 6 is running on old enough hardware for it to be retro though, but I'm far too lazy to go look it up.

When did PC gaming become better than console gaming? Obviously PC gaming was better than console gaming before 1983, but after the Famicom I don't think PC gaming really got better until 1987. I believe PC gaming has been the superior choice since 1987. What do you think?

The SFC version of the beat 'em up has more levels doesn't it? Anyway I also grew up with the MD version and I love it. Pretty comfy game.
However, I think the actual best SM game I played was the SuperS fighting game on SFC.
I still haven't played Another Story though.

Why do people who don't live in Japan or speak a word of Japanese download Japanese roms? It's way too common. Is there an advantage to playing the Jap version of a game?

Others do it either because there is no english version of the game and they would very much still like to play it
OR they know japanese.
the only times i play a japanese version of a game is when im emulating arcade games, because they tend to fuck with the difficulty for the other regions
So /vr/ can anyone help me. I wanna get into this game/franchise but I have same problem with this one as a lot of other games similar more-less : Why Barbarians and melee characters don't have special abilities, at low level in particular. I want Barbarian's Whirlwind Attack, some shouts, special strikes and similar on low lever. So , Does anyone know any mods and how to install it to have Diablo 2 (-ish) kind of Barbarian and maybe for other melee classes too.
Minsc is your barbarian, he hides a gerble up his ass. Thats the special ability for a barbarian at lower levels

The game is based off of D&D; special abilities can be gotten through consumable items and at towards the very end of Baldur's Gate 2, you get some High Level Abilities to soup you up.

What's a good (turn-based) 4x game to play if I've never played one before? I know /vidyas retro/ aren't generally known for tutorials, but given the complexity and micromanagement evidently present in most 4x games, if there is one it would be a definite bonus. I'd also love if it had a sci-fi (either space opera or maybe rebuilding after the apocalypse or something) theme.

I did it a couple years ago without any experience emulating PS1, and got it up and running without much hassle.
Remember you need the BIOS file for anything to work. Just getting the emulator and the game .iso won't work alone.
I didn't have to mess around with any of the video plugins, so you can probably ignore that initially. Just follow the instructions and you should be golden.

Look up psxfin, download that, plus a Vib Ribbon iso from emuparadise or your preferred site, done. You just open it up in the program.
The PS3/PSN version is good too though, if you want to go that route. No input lag and the CD functionality is all there.

Mortal Kombat or Mortal Kombat 2. Both were massively popular during their era, despite both being really bad games. Even the MK fans consider them pretty bad these days, due to the piss-poor AI. They were both multi-million selling games, but these days you can barely give them away since no one really wants them.

I want to play System Shock 2 and Deus Ex, but they are reallty old games and I heard by many people that some of the mecanics and the systems really suffer due to their age and I also heard about many different projects about remastering/remaking/updarting the games through mods por whole new releases
What do you guys think people should play?
remember that jjust because it was made that way desn0t mean it's perfect that way, outdated graphics and disfuncional controls are a con and you can't expect people to jsut suck it pu for some game

Quake 2 wasn't horrible, But it didn't stand the test of the time as well as the others.
Having Quake 4 being based off Strogg Quake was probably one of the stupidest decisions ever.
