I'll just leave this here...
I would say this part is a casual filter but honestly it just gets harder and harder as the game goes on
>>3317354
This thing is tremendously overhyped.
It's not that hard.
i got past the dam regularly as a kid. The part that fucked me was the mecha turtle or whatever when you're on top of the building. Never got past that part
years later, on an emulator, I played this game with Game Genie cheat so turtles wouldn't take damage and still couldn't beat the game (there was this shit that would one shot you towards the end even with the cheat on)
I didn't think to use save states, i am gonna need liquor if I'm ever gonna try that again. I remember when Angry Nintendo Nerd got popular for shitting on this game,...

What retro games do you consider to be underrated or to be ahead of their time, /vr/?
I've never seen anyone shit on MG2, on the contrary, many people say it's one of the best in the series.
I played it recently and it was good, but not the masterpiece I was expecting.
7/10.
Another anon recently posted this as the worst retro game ever, but I think it's a sorely overlooked gem. Dungeon Magic is basically the Elder Scrolls of NES. The graphics detail is similar to other first-person dungeon crawlers for early platforms, but it's mechanically realtime instead of turn-based. NPCs and enemies are constantly moving all around you, even if you just stand still and do nothing.
And it's not a dungeon crawler, despite its presentation. There are plenty of villages and outdoor areas to explore, most of those being very open spaces as...

Protip: use the knife as often as possible and avoid unnecessary encounters
Greatest retro kart racing game of all time?
CTR, Diddy Kong's aight though.
Anybody else play Speed Freaks? Shit was really good, close to being a contender.
>>3317146
CTR has a better multiplayer
DKR has a better single player
It's worth noting that CTR was literally a DKR clone because Naughty Dog rebuilt DKR levels in their engine to test it out
>>3317146
original Mario Kart
how much does one of these things improve the looks of your games? also if I already have a system (american) will a euro a japanese scart work with it. im 100% clueless about this.
>>3316879
RGB Scart vastly improves video quality, far beyond S-Video.
That adapter however is overpriced and doesn't offer too much more than it's 50 dollar counterpart on Amazon.
Waste of money. Go pick up a CRT with component or s-video inputs from CL. They usually give them away for free.
>>3316884
>CRT
Do not do this.
Blurry fucking screens, cathode ray tubes aging and less bright than they used to be, bulky and annoying. "Scanlines," no matter how much retro gamers argue, were NOT meant to be part of the game, and obscured vision.
Sonic & Knuckles is better than Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
Prove me wrong without using the word "more."
The amount of levels in Sonic 3 and Knuckles is superior to the amount seen in Sonic and Knuckles.
>>3316558
Oh no you outsmarted me, fucking shit
>>3316547
It's more best.
Am I the only one who doesn't like Super Metroid?
>This block's breakable
>That wall's fake
>This man-eater plant is actually a tunnel
>You're supposed to speedboost into a wall to get those missiles
>There's another 2 missiles behind the one you just grabbed. Sorry if we didn't tell ya
>Pull off this weird jump trick to get there early.
>Oh,...

overrated but not bad.
Just don't sequence break or go for 100%, nigga. Play the game however you want.
>>3316271
>Sorry if we didn't tell ya
You want to be told where everything is?!
That happens once in the game anyway, if I recall. And it's pretty obvious if you know how to read the terrain.
whats the best version of the sega genesis? 1, 2 or 3? I'm saying this because im looking to collect sega games that I've played from my childhood. I want to play these games on a HDTV. I was thinking about getting one of those Mini Framemeisters if possible to use one of those with it. have any ideas /vr/? I used to have a V2 but thats long gone now.
>>3316140
model 1 that says High Definition Graphics on top mainly because the sound chip on it is the best.
I have a model 2 and I'm fine with it but someday I'm buying a modded console
>>3316140
Model 1 is fine.
In theory, a modded early Model 2 has the best sound quality.
But out of the non modded it's an early Model 1.
For the love of God and all that is holy can we please ever get an HD release or something for Snatcher. I want to play the game without buying a SegaCD and I refuse to rom this shit.
Why do you refuse to rom it? It is the only way to play it right now, so worse for you.
Then buy a Wondermega
>I want to play the game without buying a SegaCD
That doesn't look like the Mega CD version anyway. You've got half a dozen ports to pick from.
Out of the Namco "Big Three", which is your favourite?

Galaga.
Galaga.
I've noticed in some strategy games especially, that when playing with dosbox (or without), the games AI becomes kinda hard?? It's as if it's benefiting from the extra CPU power of modern CPU. Some games I've noticed Death Rally (especially on hardest difficulty), Dungeon Keeper 1 (last mission) and Fragile Allegiance.
Is there some workaround for this, so the AI wouldn't gain extra actions/extra calculations?
Picture unrelated
>>3313158
In DOSBox I guess you could throttle the emulation (with CTRL-F11 and CTRL-F12) and see if that makes a difference
>>3313158
>It's as if it's benefiting from the extra CPU power of modern CPU
Anon
You do know that video game AIs aren't literally AIs right
They don't get "smarter" if they're on better machines, they behave the same way in any machine you run the game.

Previous thread.

Just wondering, why not wait till the next release? Not like there's really anything to discuss until then.
>>3308054
I agree. these generals are completely unnecessary when there aren't news subs being released
What does /vr/ think of Holy Diver (Famicom)?
He's been down too long in the midnight sea
>>3303897
kek'd.
Pretty cool game.
BETWEEN THE VELVET LIIEEESS
was he the strongest ff villain?
Tied with Garland and Ultimecia, I'd say.
Probably, but that's countered by the fact that he has no character. Truly he's evil just for evil's sake.
>>3298256
Kefka was the strongest because he actually succeeded in destroying the world.

Thanks for the contribution, familia
ITT: things you have learned from retro games.
I'll start: In the year 0373 of the new space age calendar people still use floppy discs.
Bad thread
>>3318328
Uh-Uh... Bad Board.
>>3318283
from a crypto point of view a floppy would be enough to hold a super strong encryption key. If they are easier to produce than usb I'd see this as a viable thing. 1 time padded floppies that are destroyed/magnatized after 1 use.
