Japanese Thread, talk about your quest to learn a bizarre foreign language so you can better experience 20-year old children's novelties.
Been poking around in more games and finding more stuff I can read as I progress in kanji, but now I find grammar to be tripping me up a lot. Is there a good grammar resource to check out?
Sorry, OP, but this is a topic for >>>/jp/

I would normally agree, but their threads on the matter are abysmal. I've seen much better come out of /vr/ in the past.
Have you read Tae Kim?
I like Nintendo as much as the next guy,
heck I even think that the SNES was one of best of it's time.
But the N64 was kinda shitty in comparison

Non pc stuff? Care to specify?

As in not politically correct.
Was Sonic 3D Blast an objectively good game?
I love the franchise a lot, but this game - not so much. The floaty controls and camera movements gave me nausea and headaches as a kid, so I'm having a hard time trying to play it again now that I'm older.
With that said, the art is nice and the music great, for both the Megadrive and the Saturn versions. I do enjoy the Saturn special stages a lot.
The maneuvering took some getting used to, but I enjoyed it. I would actually count it as my favorite Sonic title from the Genesis / MD era. S3&K was great, but that whole formula had already peaked with Sonic 2. I mean, if you've played one side-scrolling platformer, you've basically played them all. It's nice to have an occasional sequel that takes the series in a different direction.

The faux-3d was awful. It would've been ok if it controlled in a tight manner like Mario. Very cool boss fights though
The last thread: >>2934620
In this thread we discuss clever techniques in games that squeezed every ounce of performance out of limited hardware. If there was ever a time you were playing a retro game and asked yourself "how did they do that?", post it and we'll figure it out.
Impressive graphical effects, sound, and implementation details all welcome. Bugs, although unintended, can be interesting to understand as well.
As for me, I wonder, how Bucky O'Hare got parallax scrolling backgrounds. Did it use some mappers or it is some voodoo programming?
>>2957089
Sorry, forgot to add.
>>2957089
Parallax scrolling is just background images moving slower than foreground images.

Why are these threads so dead lately? Did everyone just fuck off to the /vg/ thread?

These threads used to be shitposting in the purest form.
And if somebody ever mentioned danmaku you'd get anti-waifu-shitposters, danmaku-hating old farts and the likes enraged,
what are some good c64 games? I want to get into c64 emulation but I dont know where to start. I played wolfenstein and liked it quiet a bit though.

http://www.hardcoregamer.com/2016/01/25/umihara-kawase-just-wont-stay-dead-coming-back-to-steam-from-degica/189352/
Hardcoregamer is claiming that the Umihara Kawase games are coming back to Steam in the next two days (Jan 28th) now under this Degica publisher.
I have no idea who HC is, nor are they listing their sources, so what's the chance this is legit?
If you've been sleeping at the wheel, all three games were ported to PC and sold in Steam in the fall of last year, but just a few weeks ago the company went bankrupt and they pulled it from Steam.
I guess most people didn't buy it the first time because failed to notice this was the whole trilogy, not just the vita port. Looking forward to shitposts complaining $30 is too much and the japanese can't into good programming (the game is locked to something like 720p).
>>2947324
>(the game is locked to something like 720p)
Well that is undeniable that it is retarded, are all the 3 games like that?
Still, I want it, was already self-flagellating for not getting them when I had the chance so I'm jumping on it as soon as I can.

Umihara is the waifu/mascot for /vr/. She has been here longer than you.

Well /v/ is exploding with this now. That video has spawned a whole new range of dank memes.
Ok /vr/, I really want to play Baldur's Gate for the first time now, but tell me, why shouldn't I play the Enhanced Edition?
I'm a sucker for extra companions but I would easily ignore them. Is the Enhanced Edition really that bad?
>>2924097
I heard it breaks more than it fixes and it's easier to mod the originals to fix the things that were originally wrong with them (being too easy, sometimes not being authentic to the rulesets, correction of bugs and exploits)
so what people will suggest is that you pirate all the basic versions of the trilogy, then spend 6 hours modding them all into one beautiful interwoven mess of the kind of balance crimes that are correctly characteristic of the Dungeons and Dragons experience
the only downside...

Enhanced Edition is fine. I'm sure someone will post a litany of reasons why its not.
I'm going to try my best to wager the pros and cons of EE, but I will, obviously, be biased, since I prefer the originals. So cons first:
>A normal game can be easily modded close to the level of EE (high resolution, BG1->BG2 mechanics, etc.) with just a few minutes of looking for fixes. There's a few things that EE does which are pretty unique (like the ability to zoom in), but I never found any use for them when playing. EE is more expensive; up to you if downloading a single Fixpack and maybe some widescreen mods is worth the bonus $$$.
>EE will likely never support certain mods that the community enjoyed but that haven't been imported. The absolutely terrific Northern Tales of the Sword Coast aren't compatible with BG1EE, and neither is Tactics mod for BG2EE (though it's had better successors). I've also seen reports about Ascension (which makes Throne of Bhaal so, so much better) not working well with BG2EE, but I can't confirm this at the time.
>EE has a lot of "fanfic" additions. Some of the NPCs might feel off (bonus EE NPCs stand out horribly from classic BG1 NPCs in particular; might feel kinda uncanny, one may even call them special snowflakes), the new items in BG1EE kinda screw up the low magic feel of BG1, with some being overpowered.
>With the above in mind, in terms of fanfic bonus content, EE is beaten by World of Baldur's Gate, which is an easily installable, stable Big World installation which updates classic BG, adds a couple of decent story/NPC/item/location mods to it and combines BG1+BG2+IWD1 into a single game. WoBG and EE are mutually exclusive. Some argue that the liberties taken with EE by Beamdog mean that you might as well go all the way and install WoBG.
