They git gud.

Seriously maybe retro games aren't for you. It's a lot of trial and error, you need to make mistakes, find out where you go wrong and correcting that.
>>

>They git gud.
cliché response, but ultimately true.
You're supposed to learn from your mistakes and gradually get better. Many platformers imply that rushing through is the way to win, but in Metroid, you have to start from the bottom and creep your way carefully until you're good enough. You will get lost, but if you've got a pen and paper you can draw your maps.

So again, git gud. To git gud, have patience. To get patience, have motivation to win. To get...

I would go in as blind as you can. FFVII is quite easy with the exceptions of the special bosses which are just a gimmick anyways. What fun there is, is in discovering it for yourself.

Just go have fun.

52 KB,
I know people here tend to shit on it, but I just got a retron 5 and it's everything I could have hoped for. Plays all the old games I want, on a 55 inch tv, with original controllers.

Plus, with the patching feature, I can buy cheaper famicom/super famicom games and just apply english patches. In my first batch of purchases I got final fantasy 4, 5, 6 and chrono trigger for $25. FF6 and chrono trigger by themselves would have cost me $200 if I bought the snes versions.

Honestly, don't be a shitposter. Tell me why this isn't the best system for retro gamers?

49 KB,
Let's have a thread for the most undeservedly hated retro system, the 32X. Could it have survived as an add-on and later Neptune with B/C Genesis games, taking the Saturn's place in the fifth gen against PSX and N64? Also what games have you enjoyed playing for it?

129 KB,
I want to buy a sega console and I can't decide which one.
Saturn is way to expensive to collect and in the master system I am just not interested.
Therefore I have to decide between the Mega Drive and the Dreamcast.
right now I am more in favour of the mega drive, but that's just kind of a general feeling, not based on anything.
So which console do you guys think is better?
Consider that I am from Pal-Land.
Also give reason why I should buy the console you suggest.
Thanks.

I would say mega drive just because it would be hard to go back from the Dreamcast but the Dreamcast is easy to burn all the games and still gets commercial releases

36 KB,
I'm not sure how I managed to overlook this series before. Maybe because it was never officially localized. It nonetheless seems like a tragically underrated RPG.

Anyone else on /vr/ know about this series? I believe there are a few fan-translated ROMs available, although I'm not sure which ones since I've been playing the games in Japanese.

The Aeon Genesis patch is strangely decent besides the excessive swearing in some parts, but it's rather accurate overall, not that it's a problem if you know moonrunes.

One piece of info for you Metal Max newfriends, the boss battle theme is actually Metal Max 2's random battle theme, another nice thing of the remake since there were only three battle themes in the NES original.

What are some retro action RPG games that use a slow, methodical combat system that predates Demon's/Dark Souls?

I've always wondered what are the historical antecedents of these games.

I've been told that Severance: Blade of Darkness is one such early example of a slow, methodical action RPG. I looked up some videos of it and noticed some similarities, but that game is from the year 2000. I was wondering if there are any from before that.

Entirely subjective. I find it way more enjoyable. But I do enjoy the SMB games.

>Point #2: Those transformation sections are dumb.
They provided some variety while being more or less tedious. The mole was definitely broken, but I think the car worked really well, the helicopter wasn't bad and being a train driving in the background was really funny.

Not to write off your Point, but Yoshi's Island is completely different from Super Mario.

Yoshi's Island is the Zelda II of the Mario series. Zelda II rocks so hard it's given me galstones

Point #2: Those transformation sections are dumb.

They're kind of unrelated to why Yoshi's Island is a great game. I don't actually have an opinion.

Sorry I don't...

If you're wondering why those were even in the game at all, look up a little game called Plok.

And play it. And I mean, really, really play it.

Let's talk about our recently played PS1 games.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4:
Came out in 2002 but the PS1 version counts as /vr/ and runs on the THPS2 engine. It is the best of the series on the PS1 because of the sheer variety of tricks and game mechanics.

PO'ed:
I was really anxious to get this game after seeing another anon posting it, but I dunno. The enemy designs range from horrible to kind of cool. The weapons are OK, the infinite throwing knives are interesting but most of the weapons are generic Doom-type stuff (with the exception of...

>Why the hell did Doom, Duke, etc require a system link cable? Was splitscreen too difficult to implement at that point?

Pretty much. A lot of early Playstation games had to use system link for multiplayer because they haven't really figured out the power of the Playstationâ„¢. I know Wipeout 2097's issue was having only system link, but Wipeout 3, which came out in 1999, had splitscreen with game modes that compliment it. This seems to fit in with Quake II, also released...

One of the best 3D platformers ever made. Knowing how Naughty Dog stretched the PS1's hardware to bring those games to life just makes it even better.

It's not the best game ever made, but it's just such a beautifully saccharine nostalgia trip. I feel like an eight year old again as soon as I hear the Ice World theme.

I know the PSone and later systems had those screens, but my Googling fails to find any version made for the old PlayStation. With some modifications it might work, but the original psx has an internal power supply.

133 KB,
The best way to get my idea across is to use a game like LSD. From the graphics, to the art direction, and especially the music, I'm looking for games that can give off a creepy vibe. Doesn't have to be a horror game, it could be, but try and post any game that gives you this feeling. I hate using LSD as an example since that game is pretty atmospheric and interesting than it is creepy.

Honestly King's Field gives me similar vibes to LSD.

They're both on the PSX and have rather similar early first person polygonal 3D eeriness.

I think a big part is that the controls are sort of clunky in both (and amplified by your slower pace in King's Field) and that PSX fog effect is keeping you in the dark so even if you're expecting something to happen it can still catch you offguard and there's this fear that arises from your clunky ass controls and getting the sudden realization...

Any game that is slightly surreal can be unsettling.

Umihara Kawase (SNES) has photorealistic black and white backgrounds that are weird, and the world is made up for objects as if you're tiny, while walking fish attack you but it's just a dream.

Porky Pig's Haunted Halloween (SNES) can be unsettling at least at the start, walking around a spooky forest where the backing track is more ambiance than music, then you climb a tree and it gets psycho-string-ish. The rest isn't a bad can get occasion provide a good spook (like the opening to...

This is one of my favorite reviews, its highly enjoyable i think and more reviews should have so much love in it.

I also like getting any kind of information about old nintendo/ps/sega games, so if you have any good suggestions about reviewer/critics lets hear them.
What i hate most about reviewers is, when they try to hard to put themselves into scene, i need information and scenes of the game, a little sense of humor is okay too but not screaming...
