/saturn/ saturn general
i just installed psuedosaturn and im getting stuck at reading cd data
is 10x too fast for saturn games ?
it's the slowest my burner will go.
Been playing Last Bronx. Pretty good fighting game, I never see anyone talking about it. Even in Saturn fan circles. Probably has the best backgrounds of any 3D Saturn fighter.
>>3008807
Probably because it's not that good.
I've been playing DoDonPachi. Pretty amazing shooter.

I burn mine at max speed (48x) and have no issues playing them on my saturn.
So this guy on Craigslist is selling a SNES, PS1, Dreamcast, and GameCube as a lot and doesn't have any video cords, power cords or controllers for them.
I'm only interested for the SNES, as the other consoles are in rough shape, but he won't break the lot up now (intially was selling for $15 each, he wants $60 for the lot). Is this worth it at all?
Here is the post.
bring your own cords to test them at the very least, but overall i'd say not worth it
>>3008764
Bring your own cords, tell him you want to test out the console before you buy.
A lot of these sorts of listings are selling genuinely busted consoles - although some they've genuinely just lost the cables over the years.
But ask yourself this: why would he have a SNES, PS1, Dreamcast and GameCube, all without cords, selling each of them for $15?
I've just read all the Pitchfork articles on Socks Make People Sexy for the Mother, Chrono and Final Fantasy series, and now I need more reviews like his.
What are some essays/reviews on retro games that have that same combination of well written examination and misty eyed melancholy, with a more general nostalgia for an era rather than a game?
>>3008561
I always liked this old review of Final Fantasy 1. It perfectly captures why the game was so great back in the day.

Not to get all e-celeb, but Spoony's talk about playing Ultima with his brother is very much like this.
And a tech version would be the software/hardware blog that was ran by K.Mandla. That same aspect of the march of time and trying to convince people that there was a reason to care about any of it at all.
From the end of the Chrono Trigger review here: http://socksmakepeoplesexy.net/index.php?a=trigger
> It encapsulaes everything about the genre that ever made it worthwhile and sidesteps the excesses.

I love Tim Rogers. His Earthbound review is my favorite:

Which was the better 4th gen controller?
>>3008437
Genesis, not even a contest. That d-pad is sex and the sixbutton layout is way better for fighters.
US SNES with dimpled buttons.
Never liked Sega d-pads.
SNES. I like the genesis controller, but it's not as comfy as the SNES controller, and the button layout just isn't as good.
I can't imagine playing a game like Mega Man X on a genesis controller, that would be so annoying.
One of these threads
What game is that from? Cool thread btw, I always saw the Lttp one wrong.

It's from Crusader of Centy (aka Soleil).

Point & click, text based etc. it's all good. What have you been playing lately? Any obscure recommendations? Perhapsgames made by you?
I finished Flight of the Amazon Queen some time ago because it was available for free from the devs and it was pretty alright. It's definitely trying to be up there with Monkey Island and Indiana Jones, the visual style and humor is very similar. Some of the puzzles were kinda stupid because your character carries a baseball bat in his inventory throughout the whole game and there's like gazillion different...

I've been also playing lots of the first Tex Murphy game. I really want to like it but it's really really hard game and not in a good way. Got the all Tex games from some bundle and I'm 12 hours in with the first game and no end in sight, it's really repetitive as well.
Good thing the plot is pretty interesting. I'm looking forward to play the other games, the third one and following games should have that sweet sweet FMV I love so much.
It's a weird mishmash of genres; point & click, flight, text adventure, shoot em up, and it doesn't...

Honestly I liked first Tex Murphy more than second one. Martian Memorandum is a point'n'click, but holy shit it feels awkward and sprites are horrible. 3-4 are pain in the ass to play because of controls and 5 is a remake of the first one. 4 is really awesome because it multiple endings and other stuff.
I've been playing DOOM, which I suppose qualifies as point & click.
Jokes aside, I haven't really played any recently aside from Anna's Quest off and on, and that one's not retro.
Tried making one in AGS back in August and realized I better learn to draw backgrounds and characters first. And pick a nice style, more importantly.

Was the window frame a sneaky way of partitioning the display area for efficiency or something?
What are some ps1 games that don't use all 4 shoulder buttons? I want to play on my psp but the analog stick is broken, the psp thinks I am using it when I am not touching it (I had to fiddle with the controls to get spyro working because it was either rotating the camera or causing spyro to roll around)
RPGs and platformers are what I am mostly looking for, but anything is fine
To clarify, I can assign any two of the shoulder buttons (l1 + r1 or l2 + r2 or a combination of them) but because the psp uses the analog stick as the l2/r2 buttons for ps1 games...

I finished Castlevania SotN on PSP, I actually preferred it to the Dual Shock.

Are any of the Shantae games worth playing? I want honest opinions based on more than just "muh fapbait"
They're fun.
Don't mind me, just posting better Shantae.
>>3007523
The first is technical wizardry. Huge game world, lots of collectables, but severely limited by the GBC. A little more subtle in terms of dialogue, but it has plenty of charm.
Risky's Revenge is neat, especially with how they tiered the environments, but it's got some obtuse puzzles and isn't really worth its asking price (on DSi anyway, it's cheaper elsewhere).
Pirate's Curse does away with the transformation mechanic and is an infinitely better game because of it. Light Metroidvania-ing, great music, and solid gameplay.
I have played it before, but lost all the games. How would I play the games in this series again?
>>3007274
I got Age I on Pirate Bay
Age II is on Steam if you want to shell out.
Age III is as well, but I'm not a fan of it.
>>3007286
Never used Pirate Bay before. Is is complicated?
Was looking to find a free way o enjoy those games from back in the day.
Those games were fun.
I feel like I should get an actual retro console now since I've had multiple CRTs in my house just because I couldn't afford a flat screen. Which one should I start with though? I mean master system looked intresting but I don't know.
>>3007210
A sega genesis! The consoles, controllers, and games are pretty cheap and the library is good as well.
>>3007210
What are you, 15? Just get a part time at McDonalds and a 200 dollar LCD with a PS4.
>>3007210
If you can't afford a $200 flat screen you should be saving your money for rent, food, bus fare to the welfare office, etc. Not wasting it on games. Emulate on your obabaphone.
