Why is this game critically acclaimed? It just seems like your average JRPG to me. Was it the FF7 of it's time?
>>3345994
it's an average JRPG that's made above-average by its charming characters and interesting environments. Also, like many JRPGs, its reputation was only enhanced by its relative rarity and exclusivity
>FF7 of it's time
what does this even mean anymore
>>3345994
Airship battles were cool and the spirit gauge was innovative.
Also dynamic battle music.
>>3345994
It's incredibly cool and has really interesting characters and environments.
I hope you guys don't mind me posting this here but this is something I thought would be fun. It might not match the general tone of this board that well, so I promise not to bump it myself unless other people start to do so, so do feel free to sage/ignore and let this slide off the catalog if you don't want to participate. I just figured many of us here would be cynical to say the least about the present state of vidya as a whole and a topic like this might be a good way to vent some frustration. So without further ado...
You are now, as of this moment, a video...

Welp me decide /vr
Option 1 - Dreamcast > VGA >Samsung Syncmaster 765 MB > Creative 2.1 Speakers
Option 2 - PS2 > SCART>Sony BVM 14G5U > Sony Receiver 5.1 Speakers (Running from Hard Drive to decrease loading times)
The PS2 version is like 40% pure filler, Dreamcast is the only choice.
>>3345367
get a vga to bnc converter. that should work
>>3345272
Why not 15khz RGB from the Dreamcast to the same monitor as with the PS2?
I have found a old pc (pic related from when he was used) and the case is so cool that I'm thinking about building a old pc on it...I'm thinking something about a pentium III with windows 98 ans a 3dfx gpu...what you guys think should be the specs? Building a old pc is worth it?
>>3345215
It's worth it if you have the room for it. I have a windows 98 machine my spare room, and it's a lot of fun. I wouldn't build a retro PC though, I would go to a computer recycling place and just pick something up.
Also you can still get a lot of computer stuff from that era for basically free nowadays, which is nice.
>>3345215
>and the case is so cool that I'm thinking about building a old pc on it
It looks like a standard 4U 19" rack-mountable server case.
Probably ATX so you could fit most mainboards made between 1996 and today.
Yeah that's just a rackmount case, nothing really special. You can of course put old 90's guts in there. The fan might be loud though. I once used a Pentium II era server as my desktop for a couple months, and the noise was insane. Well it probably didn't help that it had SCSI-2 UW disks (spinning at like 15k rpm?), but I think even just the fan was pretty damn loud compared to normal desktop machine.
Anyway pic is more typical of old desktop machine. I think this one's a Wang 286 clone, but the 90's desktop cases didn't look all that much...

I like Diablo on PS1 because the auto-targeting for spells work well and you can pause to choose skills, which makes certain spells more useful.
So you suck at video games.
Good to know.
>>3345082
Not being as efficient as you could be because you couldn't pick a skill isartificial difficulty.
A "real" mage would just think of a spell and then cast it, he wouldn't move around a virtual menu or user interface on his mind to pick a spell.
>>3345084
You get four hotkeys for spells which should be enough for spells you need to switch instantly. Selecting the rest can be quickly done during your movement.
Real wizards such as myself obviously use words of power.

> Where should I start?
1, unless you're 16-babby in which case consider X. Make your way onward.
> Does 8 suck?
It's mediocre at the very best for a mega man game, but it's still a shitload of fun. If shitty camera triggers you too much, play the demake, 8 FC. Good game.
> Are there gonna be demakes for Powered Up and Bass?
Doesn't seem to likely at all, in fact forget about it. Let's hope someone else picks up the idea and does...

> Is Wily Wars worth playing?
If you simply can't miss anything classic mega man, there's a cheat code for instant access to Wily's Tower, original bit of WW. Aside from that, the port is shit. Music murdered, graphics below average like it's some C genesis title, buster doesn't even shoot right.
> What about Powered Up?
Graphics is controversial, but it's a fine remake with ability to play as robot masters. New ones suck though.
Also here's a vote for a favorite boss...

Hey guys, I'm trying to get a full set of controllers for my N64, got a couple of them so far but the analogs are pretty worn, and I always fuck up my controller fixes/replacements. What third party brand is decent enough? I know it'll never be like a brand new official Nintendo controller, but I just need the analogs to not be complete garbage.
Hori.
But what you should be doing is just taking that shit apart with a Phillips head and throwing some Gamecube style sticks in. No soldering, you just unplug the old stick and screw in the new one, it's so easy a 10 year old could do it.
>>3344656
>Hori
Garbage ergos

Trash
Only replacement worth a shit are the sticks from the german guy.
Obligatory buy sticks from german guy post
Do you like any retro vidya to cartoon/movie adaptations, /vr/?
I'm not ashamed to say I actually like the Zelda cartoon. I just don't like that Link looks and sounds like Stormy from Sealab 2021.
And the best decision DiC ever made was using sound effects from the games in all of their Nintendo cartoons. I wonder why they never thought to do that with any of the Sonic cartoons?
>>3344540
>I wonder why they never thought to do that with any of the Sonic cartoons?
Even stranger, in one episode of AoStH, Sonic goes into a special stage and grabs rings, but the rings make this weird popping sound instead of the actual sound effect.
>>3344564
Now that you mention it, there was an episode with a giant pinball machine in it, which easily could have been a spinball tie in, but it wasn't, and it used a bunch of Mario sound effects.
Which system has better 3D?
Which system has better 2D?
Which system has better FMV?
Which system has better music?
Which system has better sound effects?
Which system has the better game library?
Which system has the better homebrew scene?
Which system has better controllers?
Which system's failure on the console market was more tragic?
What are the games that show the full potential of each console?
I think the 3DO had better controllers, better sound and a better library (Street Fighter 2, Star Control 2, Road Rash). Jaguar probably had better 3D. I think the Jaguar was probably the more tragic failure since the 3DO was doomed from the start with its weird licensing arrangement.
I don't think anyone can argue 3do had the better library. On paper its library was bretty good for a first console.
Jaguar had too complicated architecture so we've never managed to see what this machine is capable of.
Jaguar CD is a joke.
I suppose, Jaguar failure was more tragic, because it killed Atari. 3DO just became a publisher.

Earthbound.
>>3344224
OP here. Classic NES soundtrack, despite the inability to touch fucking anything in a level.
why are retro video games so expensive?
>>3344036
1. Supply and demand
2. They're out of print
3. Because people will pay absurd amounts for them
The japanese cartdiges/discs aren't.
Why'd I even stop learning nihongo, god damn it. I'm gonna get back into it.
fucking hoarders
games stop being expensive when you stop wanting them. if you want to whine, go to the other inane thread with the exact same topic
>>3344043
the japs sell old games cheap because they don't have the space to hoard, thus games continuously get injected back into the market.
Are there any good new NES-compatible controllers? Preferably with turbo buttons.
>>3343631
There's not really any good ones, but you can get cheap ones from China. Like $3 shipped. Or you can buy replacement pads and refurb all your old ones.
>>3343979
>you can get cheap ones from China
Are they comfortable to use? The only ones with a 7-pin plug I can find on AliExpress (not counting pure copies of NES-controllers, which don't appeal to me at all) are these Dendy Junior-style controllers. Does anyone know if they are any good?
