How would one start getting into the CRPG genre?
Is there a guide? Or a game that, if I play, will make the other games in the genre come more naturally to me?

How does /vr/ lower it's expectations accordingly? Like how do you get yourself into the retro mindset? Do you have trouble going back and forth?
Games have certainly gotten easier and more shallow, but I have a hard time immersing myself into old games, even from my childhood. I want to real bad though.

I just like them. No mindset or prep. Pop the game in and play. Revisiting some of my childhood faves can be dissapointing though.
Biggest issue I have is I will go on benders playing through entire retro games then when I go to play some Gt6 or something with friends it seems like it is taking forrrrrrreverrrrrrrr to load. gta5 takes so long I thought it was broken.
I grew up in the era of N64 games, from early 3d platformers to collectathons. Mario 64, Glover, Banjo-Kazooie to name a few. Did I grow up in the era of easy gaming?

They are easy games, as we all know.
Platforming isn't challenging, since you can float.
Enemies don't pose a thread since you're super strong. Bosses prove to be a mild challenge without using a power.
It's pretty, but that really doesn't make it fun.
On the other hand we have Yoshi's Island. I think the game was inspired by the Kirby series, at least they have a lot of similarities.
Cute, colorful, easy, defeat enemies by eating them and use them to attack.

It's a lot of fun, Kirby always has great controls, and messing around with copy abilities/adorable hats has a lot of appeal.
I think you make a lot of good points OP, but Kirby games are (with rare exception) something for very small children and VERY casual players. When I wasa kidI thought Nightmare in Dreamland was the most epic handheld adventure evaaar. Stuff like invisible doors and sneakily hiding copy abilities that you would need to open doors somewhere way else in the level I thought...

Kirby is a bit like going on a vacation. Challenging the player isn't it's goal, it's goal is giving a neat set of powers and a cute lackadaisical world to play with them in. It's like the platforming equivalent of a cute 'em up. But even more relaxing.

Kirby's Adventure and Kirby Super Star speedruns are crazy technical with a lot of variety in movement skill and really hard tricks.
you're right though the games are easy to beat casually. kirby games are really just more about being fun games to play than they are about the challenge. movement is fun, powers are fun, it's fun to experiment with things and create own challenges, the music is amazing and they just have a warm, comfy aesthetic all around.

I've lost of good bit of my /vr/ games growing up to years of my mother's spring cleaning crusades and a few moves.
What games has /vr/ lost to moms, shitty friends, and acts of god?

Worst offenses: Friend moved away and stole all my Game Boy games in Jr High then another friend sold by TurboExpress and Lynx for drug money in high school. Bad luck with portables.
Then a girl I was trying to bang around 2000 brought some people over and "borrowed" a number of my NES and SNES games but I didn't make very close note and doubt I got them all back.
Only game I've lost outside of actively selling them was Virtual Spingfield, which I lent to a friend on what turned out to be the last time I ever visited him.
A TurboGrafx 16 with a few games and a copy of Crono Trigger that I got in like 2001 that are both long gone
Why don't Nintendo or other companies make their own USB reproduction controllers?
They could be compatible with Virtual Console games as well as lelimsonerdy people would probably jump at the chance to buy them.
I don't want to buy some old SNES controller a kid rubbed between his asscheeks at a slumber party.

Look on eBay, there's tons of <$5 USB reproduction controllers from random Chinese companies. (I have an NES one and while the build quality isn't great it makes emulation 1000% better.)
If Nintendo made USB controllers, it would basically be an endorsement of emulation. It's not going to happen. Plus, official Wii Classic controllers in the shape of SNES controllers are a thing, look it up.
This seems like a good place to ask this since its topical: where can I find a well made S/NES USB controller? The cheapo one I had crapped out long ago. On the other hand I have a cheap USB N64 controller that works pretty damn well for what I paid for it

I just beat Rhapsody. Overall, I am terribly disappointed in what a lazy game it is. In addition to not being challenging (I know it's a game geared for little girls, but so was the Sailor Moon RPG from the 90s and that was a decent challenge), its NPCs are laughably homogeneous, its dungeons are completely interchangeable copy & paste bullshit, and for a "musical adventure," its music is repetitive and unremarkable as fuck. Never mind some of the shitty messages it sends to female players (weighing 100 pounds makes the protagonist the butt of multiple "chubby" jokes, 90 pounds is considered "svelt"). There are dozens and dozens of recruitable monsters and puppets, but none of them are necessary for advancement and so far there have been very few effects on the plot or real reason to go out of the way for them. It feels like an unfinished game.
Its humor is pretty wacky/good and there are several easter eggs laid in good spirit meant to rib a player who has been through a JRPG before, so it's not a total drag, but it is pretty much a chore after a certain point and the ending didn't make up for it.
Wikipedia claims the sequel has been fan translated, but I'm not finding anything about it online.
What are your thoughts on Rhapsody and have you played any of the other Marl Kingdom games?

You can literally mash O (auto-resolve) for every single battle except one, where you need to count 6 turns before killing the thing.
It's a bad game. I don't think you'll hear otherwise. It has "charm" but it's that Nippon Ichi charm that often comes off as cringe inducing instead.

So it's been a while since I beat this particular save file, but I've been putting off dealing with Ruby and Emerald Weapons because last time I did it, it involved a fuckton of grinding. I have pretty much all the end-game equipment, and pretty much all the OP Materia (KOTR, Mime, Final Attack, etc). Pic related is my party and their base stats without any materia. I have a nice collection of stat boost items, but I've yet to use a single one. Also, fukctons of Hero Drinks and Megalixirs because fuck yeah W-Item glitch.

Ruby can be cheesed with dazers (it's not immune to Stop). As for Emerald, hero drinks, x4 cut, Doom of the Living, and Ungermax (High level limit breaks of Yuffie and Barret) are king. Since you have the Mime materia, link it to Counterattack on Barret, dose him up on hero drinks, use it once, and he will use Ungermax every time he's attacked as long as he doesn't do anything else.
Ruby is about keeping it locked down, Emerald is about DPS.

I don't even remember what it is, but the weapons aren't even necessarily that hard. There's just some trick to them. One will wipe your whole party at one point, so just make sure at least one person has auto-revive. And the other is something similar, I forget what cause it's been so long. But not hard.
