How did some old games based around hardware sprites manage to have such intricate detail sometimes (like the Castlevania series)? A lot of games had fancy title screens and unique graphics at the end of the game and sometimes at the end of a level, but some games had things throughout the game that were so intricate or detailed without seeming to be tiled, or were just so unique, that they seemed to defy the hardware and system limitations. How'd they do that?
Actually it's much simpler than it looks on a system like the NES with hardware sprites and tile graphics. If you'd tried to do that on a PC with a dumb frame buffer, it would be far more difficult.

What are some of the worst RPGs you've played? I can't think of any that really stand out, besides the obvious choices of virtual hydlide or beyond the beyond. I wanna hear stories and experiences.

I've played shoddily designed RPGs but Wiz 4 had a lot of thought and testing put into it. Unfortunately it all went into making the game as unforgiving as possible.

it does 2 things fairly well, and thats the intro, and the ending. Everything else is grindy, uninspired, and irrelevant to the over arching plot fetch quests.

For console games I prefer emulation because I don't like CRTs and like playing on the go.
For portable systems I usually prefer the original, but am fine with emulating as well.

I discovered today that I own over $1400 in Saturn games.
I honestly feel sick. I’ve owned these things for years. I love these games. Why does this hobby have to be filled with such scumbags? I want people to enjoy these games and not treat them as fucking investments. I understand games being a bit more than retail. Maybe around $150 or so. At least that’s within the realm of reason. Some games actually benefitted from the Genesis sound chip. The Earthworm Jim soundtrack for example sounds way...funkier than on the SNES, where it sounds like it's being played in a wool sock.

Bad b8, but I'll bite. The Wii was a good gimmicky hardware that inspired the motion gaming phase, for good or bad, the SNES hardware stomped the shit out of the competition, and the WiiU making use of the tablet (of which is criminally underused) is an example of making actual peripherals viable.
If your argument is only "lol these graphics r gud" then you're not saying much. Most ps1 games looked like utter garbage in comparison to the n64, but the FMVs were beautiful so who gave a shit.
