So I've played most of the Civilization series. SMAC, III, IV, a bit of V. But I never really got much into Civ II.
Where exactly should I start? There seems to be a lot of options for playing Civ II. Vanilla, Vanilla + expansions, Multiplayer gold, Test of Time. Which one is the best to play, ToT looks pretty nice, are there any problems with it compared to vanilla civ II?
Also, what a about mods? Any essential bugfixes or patches, any good gameplay overhauls, or nice graphics mods? I'd like to know.

I've heard a few people recommend freeciv. Most of my experience with Civ2 is the PSX version though, so I've got no clue what the ToT version is like. I can't even really find what it does.
I've never played Test of Time so I can't comment on its quality. I've played the rest though and vanilla Civ II is probably the best place to get started. Multiplayer Gold sets all AI to be permanently hostile which isn't much fun and the two expansions are a mixed bag but fun to mess around with now and then.
>>3217935
Ho lee shit I totally forgot about freeciv. Is it a literal reskin of civ II but nicer looking and open source or is it a bit different mechanics/AI wise?
>>3218132
I heard about the multiplayer gold thing, yea. I mostly play SMAC so the main reason I'm even wanting to play civ II is because I'm looking for something more laid back and easy as kind of a break, hostile AI sounds like the opposite. What do the two expansions add exactly?
What are some of the most crazy and deadly materia combinations?
Miming a double KOTR is pretty broke

Combining Electrolux with Bovril lights a fire on Sephiroth's arse.

Who are you quoting?
No, maybe it's because I grew up with a Famiclone (that looked exactly like the japanese Famicom), but when I first saw the NES I thought it was bulky for no reason. My friend was like "I have the Nintendo! the original!" and when I went to his house and saw his sister playing SMB3, I didn't even notice a difference with my good ol' Family Game, and wondered why it needed to be so big compared to my cute little machine that could play the same games.
Later I learned that my console was a bootleg, etc. I still have a warm spot for it (and its many...

>bulky for no reason
Seriously. This is the motherboard. Look at all that wasted space.
But that said I really like the boxy stormtrooper design.

I want /pol/ to leave.
I dont know who the new janitors are but this is getting ridiculous.

>getting this triggered
are there any games where you get 1 hit and you have to restart the whole game?
>>3216328
No I just wonder how much longer will mods tolerate underage anons on +18 site.
I've got whisky and rest of today left for celebration
Congrats man. Judging by the pic you beat this on an emu. I always heard that was impossible due to lag. How'd you do it?

Good shit, my man.

>I always heard that was impossible due to lag

In the NES game M.C Kids, why are there 2 kids but only 1 sleeping bag?
That's only one half of an A-frame tent. The other bag is under the camera.
Probably they ran out of tiles.
Yes, we watched the new episode of gamesack, it didn't need a thread
>Trying to play Ikaruga on the hardest setting for the first time in over a decade.

That last boss of that game on hard mode is the most incredible thing I've ever played.
Then why the fuck ya'll niggas eyes reflecting fucking MARIO BROS, cuz???
I saw someone play this once. It looks like you have to be autistic to appreciate it.
>every skill other than small guns, lockpick and speech is either useless, sub-optimal or has no use for 85% of the game
and you call this a real RPG?
>but muh choice and consequence
yeah, muh >pick the obvious good deed and earn extra experience and great loot, or be a stupid jerk for little reward. So much choice
At least atmosphere is great but man, if this is the best the genre has to offer, better stick to tabletop RPG
It has a stat system so it's a RPG. How many of the stats actually work isn't important, as long as you get the illusion of choice.
You're right OP, I've always said the same. The modern Fallouts are no different.

>sneak
Let you pull off some amazing feints and turn-based goodness and avoid instakill random encounters, particularly Enclave in FO2.
>big guns
Flamer and Rocket Launcher are an underrated combo for crowd control and dealing with large groups. Superstrong in FO2.
>energy weapons
Best weapons in FO1, strong in FO2.
>throwing
look up the flare build or just get a few points in...

Product placement in games
MC had McKids which costed us money.
7UP had Cool Spot which costed us money.
Kellogs made a great platformer which was free.
Haribo (Hariboy's Quest) made a point and click adventure which costed us money.
McCain fries made a fun point and click adventure which was free.
Zool. You collect candy to beat each level.
Is it good? No, it's a bad sonic clone. Zool 2 is decent though
>>3215258
That's kind of an ironic opening choice there, OP. The devs were actually concerned with making a good game over product placemen, so McDonalds ended up not backing that game because it didn't plug McDonalds food enough in their opinion.
Anyway, Biker Mice from Mars is one of the worst offenders ever. It is absolutely riddled with Snickers ads.
So I've been playing this game for 20 years, playing and finishing it every few years at least, and I had no clue about the electrocution method for beating this guy until yesterday.
I had been just blasting away with missiles like a fucking chump. Am I retarded? Did everyone else know?
What simple things did you done wrong for a while in games?
>>3215214
>he actually gets the grapple beam
Nigga, do you even speedrun?
>>3215215
Ha, no. I usually 100% it at my leisure. I've watched a lot of speedruns like Zoast or whoever. Shit is incredible.
>>3215214
The quickest way to kill Draygon is with a shinespark, but it's not easy. I see speedrunners flub the quick kill all the time.
A costly misstep, because Draygon is one of the two bosses in the game that can very easily kill you on a speedrun (the other being Phantoon). Basically, everyone hates Draygon.

Why did this port catch flak? Was it because it didn't look as good as its arcade counterpart? Also, Virtua Fighter thread.
Do you think the first one will ever be on Fightcade? My arcade removed VF5, and now I have no way to play VF against others.
>>3214872
VF5FS has solid netplay on PS3 and is $15 for a digital copy, beyond that you will be really lucky if you can either emulate the earlier VF games successfully or convince the PC ports of VF1/2 to let you play online on a modern system
>>3214864
It was clearly a rushed port. Hell, it doesn't even have VMU features of any kind, not even basic avatars for whatever character you're playing as.
Why was Europe never a console powerhouse? They were doing pretty good on the home computer scene, but why did this never translate into console success?
>>3214368
Japan dominated the Market in the mid to late 80s and 90s, and America had the background knowledge of Atari and Mattel with the financial powerhouses of Microsoft and Apple. What companies do they have in Europe with that pedigree and experience?
I'm more surprised Apple never released a home console.
>>3214374
>I'm more surprised Apple never released a home console
They did. It was called the Pippin and it failed.
>>3214380
Besides, I doubt even a console thought up by Steve Jobs could have taken on the NES.
This game is way too fucking good

Looks boring as hell.
What used to scare you as a kid? I ran to shut the power off on my SNES to avoid having to see this game over screen. I played Mortal Kombat 3 and nothing in that game scared me as much as this screen for some reason.
