Honestly before Serena I thought Dawn's bond with Ash was the closest we'd ever get to a girl with a thing for Ash again. Something that had no real canon evidence but if you stretch it you could see something.

To some extent, this is true, but I personally like to think that momentum applies to the plot and characters across several episodes. Stalebaiter's "technique" is to always build his claims on the assumption that momentum doesn't exist plot- and character-wise: he assumes that large, supported concepts can suddenly reverse course and head off in the opposite direction on an episode-by-episode basis. It's an assumption with little to no prior history within the anime outside of MAYBE the first some years of it.
