The only Touhoumon fangames that even remotely have a new story was World Link, Another World and Gensokyo Scenario, and Faith & Prayer Version. World Link was... really mediocre when you got past Hoenn, Another World was basically Gensokyo Scenario translated to english, with Vanilla Fire Red thrown in, and an outstandingly mediocre Gensokyo sub-plot. As for Faith & Prayer Version... Shrug?

1.8 wasn't really about super hard battles, that was fangame developers thinking that Touhou games are all about being hard. The original 1.8 Fire Red, Hemo's original 1.8, is rather unedited outside of the change between Pokemon to Touhoumon. The level curve remained intact. Enhanced is not the best example of this, considering the developer used several of the unofficial patches to 1.8 Official, translated them to English, and released it.
That being said, Enhanced is probably much better than World Link or Another World was.

The story throws a shit ton at you, so you should have the max of 255 by the time you beat the game.
Further more, it's a random drop from trainer battle, so you can just grind the Elite 4 for them. Netplay just happens to be a quicker way of grinding them out.

It's explained in the guide what each stone does, but basically you just want to stick whatever two puppets you have in the parent slot, then keep shuffling until you get a puppet with more S ranks than one of the parents. Swap that parent out for the reincarnated puppet, then start swapping out another puppet's stats until you get an even better puppet. Just keep following this pattern until you get perfect puppets.
